Consistent rain over the last 20 minutes, rainfall rate between 10 to 25mm/h. Just clocked 100mm month to date, 3rd month in a row of 100mm+. La Nina definitely having more of an impact this Spring with a weaker ridge.

Best day for any thunderstorm activity this week would be today. But in inland north Canterbury from molesworth station area into Nelson ranges.
MetService have pin pointed it well from what GFS throws out

I think that MetService moderate risk area is spot on looking at how promising it is to the west atm.

Do you get many thunderstorms in Blenheim? I spose today is how they most often happen there, drifting of the Wither Hills?
Fascinating stuff it is.

Only about 1 or less a year. They often form over the Wither hills then head out towards Wellington with Blenheim only getting the edge if that.

re the recent big solar flare, I see this info released:
Potential impacts (G3 - Strong):
(area of impact primarily poleward of 50 degrees Geomagnetic Latitude)

Induced Currents - Power system voltage irregularities possible, false alarms may be triggered on some protection devices.
Spacecraft - Systems may experience surface charging; increased drag on low Earth-orbit satellites and orientation problems may occur.
Navigation - Intermittent satellite navigation (GPS) problems, including loss-of-lock and increased range error may occur.
Radio - HF (high frequency) radio may be intermittent.
Aurora - Aurora may be seen as low as Pennsylvania to Iowa to Oregon.

Yea heavy rain here too. Over 100mm for the month. Not sure how many months in a row now of reaching average at least or well above average. Must be since about June. Very good coming into summer to have the water table where it should be.
