Different today to yesterday.
Overcast and cold with light SE wind and the occasional showers. 5.4mm for today.
Even had the fire going.
Today's maximum was just 11.1C.

That cold rain has made it here now, got to 15.3 just after 9am and now down to 13C. My coldest November day record could be under threat if this hangs around most of the day

What ingredients are missing to make this SE wind we have in Waikato today a foehn wind? Instead we have a cold SE strong wind.
From what I can tell though, the current setup shows a moist easterly driving against the kaimais and the rain isn’t making it over and we are left with a rather dry air but it isn’t warm at all.

it has been a relatively warm night here though, even though it was clear skies for half the night here, so there is a bit of a Foehn effect
we now dont have any sunshine...if we did then I suspect it would be warmer?
i see just now reports of trees blown down in Tokoroa, with this strong SE wind

ps, weatherzone has a new sat image with overlay options :)

Interesting to see the strong winds at yours and other areas Jamie. Very light SSE here at the moment.

A similar situation with heavy rain and cold in east of North Island.

Stayed below 14 most of the afternoon so my record for November lowest daily max temp was broken. Today's max 15.3, previous record was 16.3 in 2012.

I see we are forecast to reach 22 tomorrow, big difference across 2 days for here.

Some rain overnight and this morning but slowly clearing away to partly cloudy conditions this afternoon.
Southerlies dying out turning more easterly this afternoon.

According to Metservice (their Facebook post), November 18 1960 (date of map taken from Paperspast) was Gisborne's wettest November day on record, with 104mm recorded. Yesterday was it's 2nd, with 95mm.

Here's a striking satellite image from yesterday morning showing the SE flow really blasting through the South Taranaki bight and out into the Tasman...

Clear skies here but nothing to see from here to the south at the moment.
Blue dome day here with a moderate NE. Slight frosting this morning but warm in the sun out of the wind 19C for today.
Weather here today, a bit of a contrast to the wet weather over the NE part of the North Island around the Gisborne area. 8-o

I see reports it was visible from Auckland sometime during the night (through breaks in the cloud), probably via a long exposure camera

The aurora was huge last night in Dunedin. I took so many photos out at Blackhead beach, but you could see it by eye in even the hill suburbs in the city. Some of the rays were at least 45˚ above the horizon. The aurora phenomenon Steve even showed up.

Been a very strange start to November in Christchurch. Muted temperatures with a top in the first 5 days of only 16c. Only projected to get above 20c from Monday the 8th. Normally Canterbury anniversary weekend next weekend is always hot so fingers crossed we start seeing some heat.

That line over Waitomo to South Waikato looks rather slow moving.

Don’t rate our chances of thunder here in Hamilton today. Tomorrow looks better.

The rain radar the last few days has been weird to watch. Rain moving backwards. If you scroll the images backwards it looks like a usual westerly pattern. Very strange to have such a prolonged SE wind flow.
