Not much wind at all in Kaikoura all day, but we did get the classic NW sky at sunset.

Re: General December Weather
Starting to look like a pretty good Christmas week overall, which is great after all of the cloud of the last couple of months.

Re: General December Weather
Yrs. The thunderstorm we had last Friday sort of cleared all the clagg wet weather and overcast conditions away and brought on summer here.
Today a blue dome day with light winds and 29.2C.

Another great day alright.NZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote: ↑Wed 22/12/2021 13:36 Another great day here for photosynthesising, again
Great that the wind didn't get as bad as forecast, my corn crop is still vertical photosynthesizing and not horizontal.
Currently a pleasant 23deg

Re: General December Weather
A question to us cantabes - As I'm sure you would have noticed the winds of the last few days has been some what hazy, looking at the hills they have not been the crystal clear like they normal are during a NW period, why is that?? often colder sw/westerlies can be but this is not a cold air flow.

I noticed that here on Monday, Very hazy for A NW wind I suspect a bit of it was dust also, Yesterday and Today are the opposite with a very clear sky and can easily see the distant mountains. High of 29c today and 28c yesterday.Richard wrote: ↑Wed 22/12/2021 18:03 A question to us cantabes - As I'm sure you would have noticed the winds of the last few days has been some what hazy, looking at the hills they have not been the crystal clear like they normal are during a NW period, why is that?? often colder sw/westerlies can be but this is not a cold air flow.

Yes, Richard, I have noticed that too and it's been a bit dusty on some surfaces as well.

If the weather had lately been dry, dust yes, but here and over Oz has not, so?

Re: General December Weather
Another fine day here with light to moderate winds betwixt north and east but in Temuka today there was a roaring NW blowing when we went shopping there today. Nothing like that here. Today's maximum was 30C. I suppose it was windy in other parts of South Canterbury but not here in sheltered Geraldine? Dry southerly through here just before 10pm.

Re: General December Weather
Drove from Kaikoura to Manapouri today, I also saw that dust in the air while crossing the plains. 31C in Ashburton and then only 10C at The Key later in the afternoon. Highlight was swimming at Lake Pukaki in a full gale northwesterly and a 2 metre chop, that was quite a thrill

Re: General December Weather
The type of weather today is quite common here, often the NW wind holds at bay the opposing coastal wind and cloud, been like since this morning but managed it finally swing to the SE at about 3.00pm

Re: General December Weather
A partly cloudy and fine day with freshening ENE winds this afternoon.
Some weak Cu development to the south of here later this afternoon.
Warm in sheltered areas away from the wind with it being 24C here.
Winds easing this evening.

Re: General December Weather
I grew up in Dunedin and one thing I noticed was that the weather was erratic over Xmas itself, but came right over New Year. One year we went up to Lake Benmore for New Years and a cold front had come through complete with snow on the mountain tops, but that was followed by a whole week of stinking hot weather.

Re: General December Weather
Looking very wet in Chch on Tuesday 28th going by the GFS, hope that changes. UK model not concerned.
Looking at a very large anticyclone from around new year, possibly with a southerly front or two making slight inroads but otherwise it looks strong.
