General December Weather

Unread post by NZ Thunderstorm Soc »

Looks like an anticyclonic start for December with no significant weather events occurring over the country :-k

NIWA posted this tweet recently about the SST's around New Zealand being 3°C above normal for the time of year. How will this (and the developing La Nina phase) affect the weather in NZ for the summer? Will this enhance the rainfall?

Interesting to see how this pans out for December, Simon.
We have had hot and rather cool days in November with some fresh snow on the hills also days of 30C here. A real mixture.

NNW/west coast atmospheric river,(s) dirty high, slack southerly on the GFS radar. Wouldn't mind a nice cold upper pool to spice things up a bit with more humid air around.

If its a repeat of the summer of 17/18 I will be happy. 30 days over 30c from Dec 2017 to March 2018. Was a brilliant summer

See what Summer can bring, a small shift in pattern can make a big difference to our weather.
Picked up a few showers here overnight, a cloudy rather humid start to December, the general Auckland dewpoint 17C, a warm minimum temperature overnight of 18C.

Regarding the first posting on this thread, I don't know about this now? Might be some rain over the WE.
Anyway, we haven't seen any sunshine, here, so far for this month.
Cloudy all day today but mild with it being 17.6C the maximum for today. NE breezes.
Supposed to be a warm 3 months according to media releases from MS and NIWAR.

This weather reminds me of later in summer. You can tell the sea temps are fairly warm when you have a breezy E-NE coming off the coast with temps still getting up towards 25C (and hanging around 17/18 at night)

Another cloudy day today but with mostly higher cloud. The sun did try to pop through at times making it the most sunniest day we have had so far this summer. Very mild with it coming up to 21.6C today. There was a shower overnight with 1.2mm falling.

A partly cloudy and humid day down here with some unstable forms and light southerly winds.
24.2C here today.
For a thunderstorm forecast, nothing much on the radar.
Looking forward to the drizzle with tomorrow's southerly change?
Here's a photo I took this afternoon looking towards the Hunters hill behind Waimate.

Overcast day, especially from mid morning when midrange cloud moved over delivering overthrow rain from the West Coast.
Occasional rain from then on with light northerly breezes.
A change to southerly winds from mid-afternoon delivered lower cloud and a drop in temperature.
More rain this evening with southerly breezes and cooler temperatures.
22.4C this morning before it clouded over from the NW dropping to 16C not long after the southerly change.
20mm of rain all up for today.

Last nights EC run shows a river of rain and thunder storms hanging over the north island. Showing 200mm for here in the next 10 days. I hope the general setup of this situation can come to fruition. Need some rain.
