I think these are them, looking north from Timaru. I wonder if the north otago storm will keep going and get this fardarcyplumb wrote:Some impressive towers to my south. Rapidly developing.

Yes I believe they’re the same ones I’m looking at. They’ve been building for some time now but no precipitation yet.

Re: General December Weather
Just watched the southeasterly change go up through mid-Canterbury on radar (so much for my comments about northward movement) and that has triggered some cells inland west of Chch.
Can't see squat in terms of low/mid-level cloud from home due to the hills, so probably going to take a drive through the tunnel soonish and see what's happening.

That storm north of Oamaru looks intense. No warning on it at the moment.

I’m getting the impression that the ingredients just aren’t quite right for today. Someone with a bit more knowledge than me can elaborate I’m sure.

Re: General December Weather
The cold front (and upper cold air) that is triggering most of the storms is only up to Timaru, anything ahead of that is just convergence is my reading of it. Remember the risk is mainly Ashburton south (and includes the evening) so I wouldn't expect much around Chch. That said, the cell going north looks large and reasonably potent with what looked to be hail on its back end (looking from Tunnel Road). Tony might have a report on that one soon?

Re: General December Weather
A few spots of rain here at the moment: the clouds around are more interesting than one might glean from the rain-radar.

Seems slow moving and a high base. Doesn't look like much is falling from it...Chris W wrote: ↑Thu 30/12/2021 17:27 The cold front (and upper cold air) that is triggering most of the storms is only up to Timaru, anything ahead of that is just convergence is my reading of it. Re: General December Weather
After a promising morning with a NE wind and ground heating, a sad day here with no thunderstorms forming but the clouds did look impressive this afternoon especially after the southerly wind change around 3:30pm. Some photos below.
Today' s maximum was 24C and we had 0.4mm of drizzle this evening.

Re: General December Weather
A cooler finish to December here after all the earlier humid warmth. We could do with some rain/showers here but the Summer ridge is in full control, another dry week next week.

Re: General December Weather
Storms that fired yesterday were pretty much in the vicinity of where we thought it would happen. Despite the odd small cell further north. The thing lacking yesterday was the cold air. -20 wasnt an overly cold air mass at 500mb

Re: General December Weather
Did you go and chase? You would of had to go way past Timaru for any action. Haven't heard of any reports of hail damage from the 2 warnings that MS issued yesterday afternoon so it couldn't of been all that severe.mikestormchaser wrote: ↑Fri 31/12/2021 14:26 Storms that fired yesterday were pretty much in the vicinity of where we thought it would happen. The clouds that developed at the wind change looked good here but that was that.

Re: General December Weather
After the clearance of low cloud and drizzle , it was a fine day but with lots of layered mid to upper level cloud. Quite mild with light N to NE winds but becoming calm later in the day. Mild day with it getting up to 20.6C. Mild calm evening to welcome in the New Year.
Done the rainfall total for the year which was 986.1mm over 156 days. More details on this years weather later from here.
...anyway, here is a photo I took this evening of the sunset to farewell 2021.

Re: General December Weather
An exceptionally warm December overall rounded off what is likely to be NZ's warmest year on record. Many record warm December mean temps recorded in northern parts of the country, including Auckland, Tauranga and Hamilton. Rainfall a bit of a mixed bag, but generally wetter than normal in central and eastern areas and drier in northern and southern areas.
