Re: General January Weather
21.4C max here with these dreary conditions, that's actually the coolest max temp of the summer to date. 4mm rain so far.

Re: General January Weather
It was actually nice today being a lot cooler. Not quite 2mm of rain today. Hoping for 10x that tomorrow.David wrote:21.4C max here with these dreary conditions, that's actually the coolest max temp of the summer to date. 4mm rain so far.

Re: General January Weather
Quite a remarkable cold shortwave moving into the South Island late Tuesday. On Wednesday, vast temperature differences become apparent at 500hpa between the top and bottom of the country. Tropical like upper temps in the north and winter like uppers down south.
The difference is quite sharp along the lower half of the south island, something to watch.

Re: General January Weather
Yet, another day of clagg here. Had the fire going these evening.
Today's maximum was 16.3C with 3mm of drizzle,
Still quite green down here.

A bouquet to MS for this tweet...

But a brickbat to NIWA for this Facebook post...

Firstly, because their definition of a 'dry day' should read 'less than 1.0mm', not '1mm or less'.
And secondly, because they seem to have forgotten about Whangaparaoa and Warkworth's 39 day dry spell in 2013.

Re: General January Weather
I just noticed my station recorded 36 consecutive dry days up to and including 23 Jan, which is actually a record for here. In the Jan 2020 dry spell we had a day with 1.8mm locally.Nev wrote: ↑Tue 25/01/2022 08:26 A bouquet to MS for this this tweet...

Re: General January Weather
Note that this summer's 37 day dry spell was recorded at Auckland Aero, Motat and Albany (Whangaparaoa is missing a day's data).
And the 2020, 47 day dry spell was recorded at Pukekohe, Motat and Whenuapai (Auckland Aero and Albany recorded 38 days).

Re: General January Weather
A glance at GFS today shows dew points up to 15C coastal Canterbury Weds afternoon/evening, -23C 500mb with strong shear. Possibly some cloud to subdue heating a little but looking interesting anyway. South Canterbury especially but maybe a late show reaching Chch?Tornado Tim wrote: ↑Mon 24/01/2022 22:30 Quite a remarkable cold shortwave moving into the South Island late Tuesday. Re: General January Weather
anyone able to tell me what the driest January on record for Te Anau is? Only 8.8mm here this month and models showing only about another 1mm before end of the month. Its getting a little dry here. The Te Anau Basin is well browned off.

Re: General January Weather
Metservice just sticking up a low risk away from the Otago/Canterbury coasts tomorrow. Maybe a lack of heating I guess.

Re: General January Weather
Fairly decent rumbles here, very surprising looking how far away it is on the radar

Re: General January Weather
Looks like this one near Motuihe Island (140kA, which is high). Must've been a 'bolt from the blue' going by the radar?
Shook half the island from what I've heard.

Re: General January Weather
Bit of an anti climax! Just 3.5mm moderate rain from that. Great to get the thunder though after so long without

Action was north and east of Ak city. I went over to Milford Beach, a couple of photos of storm clouds over the Gulf.

Re: General January Weather
Sigh, just want more of this rain as it's just skipping by, thunder would be a bonus.

Re: General January Weather
A bit brighter here this morning and afternoon but still rather cloudy and claggish especially this evening when the drizzle moved back in.
Light winds and rather mild for a time early this afternoon with today's maximum being 20.1C. 0.7mm of drizzle for today.

Re: General January Weather
If it makes you feel any better John, we are stuck with the clagg-filled days here in Ashburton as well. Very dull and boring. Certainly not your traditional Canterbury summer.NZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote: ↑Tue 25/01/2022 22:56 A bit brighter here this morning and afternoon but still rather cloudy and claggish especially this evening when the drizzle moved back in.

Re: General January Weather
This area missing much of the rain, Grey Lynn showing only 5mm so far for January and that may end up being the total rainfall for the month or close to it.
See what todays afternoon convergence can produce but the upper levels are warming through the day.
