General January Weather

Unread post by NZ Thunderstorm Soc »

Looks like a fine, and, but weak anticyclonic start for 2022 :-k
Maybe some issues with a TC later in the week?

Yes it looks possibly that way, GFS now lining up with what UKMO was showing this morning. Very much one to keep an eye on from the 4th onwards. New Year's Day and the next couple should be warm.

Stunning in North Island heartland also, cloudless sky and very good visibility. Reminds of McKenzie basin weather in summer.

If, like the outlook that didn't work the other day here, I don't like my chances tomorrow.
Anyway, a day of clagg here to welcome in the New Year but quite mild though.

Will be nice to lose this constant SW wind tomorrow. I see Metservice are forecasting 30 here on Tuesday! Very rare to see that

I've noticed that they have added the word hot to their forecasts for temperatures in the 30s.
On the other hand, it wasn't hot here today with persistent low cloud cover or clagg. However it wasn't all that cold with a maximum of 20.7C for today. Sadly we haven't seen the sun so far this year :(

Saw that back in 1998, and maybe a handful times since then, but it is rare.

They are not consistent tho. This here shows how they don’t have any consistency with the word hot. We even have the word significant in there today.

Yes inconsistent alright, they have 30deg for here today yet only 'fine and warm', not even very warm. Maybe 'hot' is used when a days expected high is around that locations long term max temp extreme??, a temperature in the high 30's for Canterbury might qualify it for term 'hot'

Humidity could have something to do with it too I suppose.

26.8C here today despite that fresh NE blowing. Will be interesting to see how high it can get the next few days with lighter breezes

Yes, breezy here for the last 4 or 5 days, lighter winds from tomorrow so it will feel much warmer here from tomorrow and the humidity is generally on the rise this week. Looks like a weak trough is coming north later in the week.

Today's maximum was 27.8C. Thin high cloud cover of the As type for much of the day with light easterly winds.
No hot weather as compared to other parts of the country. I see Roxburgh tipped Lower Hutt for today's hottest temperature with Invercargill coming in at 32.2C for third place.

Metservice still using the wording “significantly hot” for here today despite a forecast max of only 27… which is nothing particularly unusual

Perhaps this more about appearing to be "significantly cool"?

Not quite sure what you’re meaning. I was just passing on some information about why the wording has changed on the Metservice website.

Thanks for providing the info, I want responding to you specifically. My comment was a tongue-in-cheek reference to MetService's possible motivation. Just humour.
