Re: General January Weather
Not common to get the daily max so late here - just pushed up to 27.5 on the SW change. Nothing unusual but the warmest of the summer so far anyway. Have been a bit surprised we haven’t even hit 28 the last couple days. Tomorrow looks like a good chance though.

Re: General January Weather
Ah yes, I see most PWS's south of about Takanini were in their early 30's today...
Be interesting to see what NIWA's Pukekohe site got to today.
Also 2nd-warmest Jan temp for NIWA's Hamilton, Ruakura site today...
https://twitter.com/NiwaWeather/status/ ... 8649560065
Edit: Ruakura's record is 32.9C set on Jan 20, 2019. However, it also recored just over 32C in 1924, 1928, 1935 and 1936 (records from 1906). So slightly misleading?

Re: General January Weather
From memory for Ruakura I found a 34.7 from either 1935 or 36 in clifo. I think because the old site was a few hundred metres from present day site they are now saying the 2019 32.9 is the "site record". Hard to fathom how the 34.7 could have occurred but the mid 1930's did apparently see some standout hot summers.Nev wrote:Ah yes, I see most PWS's south of about Takanini were in their early 30's today...

She was a hot one alright. Started to have that oven heat in your face feeling when you walked outside, that I’ve experienced in Australia a bit.

Re: General January Weather
My station maxed at 33.4 so not quite a record. However almost seems more "valid" as stayed above 33C for a full hour today. The day record 33.6 was recorded the temp spiked for a short time when air became completly still about 4pm.

Re: General January Weather
Yes, that Ruakura 34.7C all-time record was sometime in Dec 1935 apparently - the actual dates aren't listed prior to 1940 unfortunately - 2nd highest was 33.3C in Feb 1928 and 3rd highest was 33.1C in Feb 1935. And yes, the site was moved several hundred metres to the NW, but that wasn't until around 2006.cbm wrote: ↑Tue 04/01/2022 20:52From memory for Ruakura I found a 34.7 from either 1935 or 36 in clifo. Re: General January Weather
Yet, another day of high cloud cover although it did thin a bit later this afternoon.
Light winds between south and SW. Today's maximum was 22.1C.
Nothing startling.

Re: General January Weather
Dec as opposed to Jan or Feb makes that 34.7 even more remarkable. I'll have a search of papers past again some time to see if can find any reports from the time.Nev wrote:Yes, that Ruakura 34.7C all-time record was sometime in Dec 1935 apparently - the actual dates aren't listed prior to 1940 unfortunately - 2nd highest was 33.3C in Feb 1928 and 3rd highest was 33.1C in Feb 1935. Also Hamilton Aero's 4th-equal warmest Jan temp yesterday (and 5th-equal all-time record), from records since 1971.
https://twitter.com/MetService/status/1 ... 30/photo/1
I see NIWA's Pukekohe site recorded 30.2C yesterday, its 3rd highest all-time temp after 30.5C in Feb 1998 and 30.4C in Jan 2019, from records since 1970.

Re: General January Weather
Blue dome day here with an easterly blowing. Thank goodness we got rid of that stagnant high cloud of the last couple of days, early this morning.
Nothing happening west wize or down south at the moment.

Re: General January Weather
The last 2 -3 week have been particularly dry for the upper NI with more dry weather in the outlook, high pressure building in from the southwest shutting the door on any subtropical activity coming this way.

Just perfect in Lyttelton harbour today for a cycle round to Purau and the ferry back complete with dolphin sighting. Bliss.

General January Weather
I picked up on the fact early Jan was going to be dry. The only reason models were saying wet start to Jan was that they were confident that the coral sea cyclone would move down this way which was alway a big gamble and something I couldn’t see happening given time of year and a solid ridge building. I can’t see any decent wet for the rest of the month last time I looked at the long range.

Re: General January Weather
There's a thunderstorm making its way north from Otago but the risk is inland, so not sure it's going to continue up the coast.
85% humidity here, it's cooking out there!

So tomorrow I see I'm in the middle of a moderate risk, on my first day back at work. Wonderful! I hope it's quiet so I can chase if it fires up.

Re: General January Weather
Tomorrows prognostic forecast for Thunderstorms is interesting. Relative good model agreement with the trough passing through in the afternoon BOP and into central northern Waikato come mid evening. GFS being the more conservative model out of the three with fairly good agreement between UKMO and EC on trough timing and good convective parameters.
I think there is more of a risk for central Waikato getting something in the evening as that trough moves through and the upper temps cool off as afternoon/evening progresses.

Re: General January Weather
The persistent high cloud cover that we have had for much of the year so far, cleared away overnight and this morning to become a blue dome day with easterly winds.
However there were some weak Cu forms to the west along the foothills not coming to much but there were brief thunderstorms inland along the Northern Otago coast this afternoon. From 6pm, the southerly come through with low stratus and by 7pm, low cloud cover with some drizzle later.
Today's maximum was 26.6C with 0.4mm of drizzle this evening.

Re: General January Weather
good call Tim
https://www.metservice.com/warnings/thu ... rm-outlook
but there is a lot of high cloud at the moment, limiting heating
or will that not matter so much as its more related to the SE change anyway?

The cloud will clear with plenty of sunshine this afternoon and warm to hot temperatures, the incoming trough is something to watch for this evening east of here.

The metservice graphic doesn’t seem to match the text (for the Hunua ranges at least)
