Briefly heavy rain in St Albans, no thunder/lightning observed. (blinked eyes rapidly to imagine sheet lightning)

There's the wind.

If those uppers had just been a bit colder or maybe more heating/NE maybe we'd have been in business. Kind of fell apart over the city but still nice to see a downpour

Lights have flickered on and off occasionally including just now (9:02pm).

Photo of heat showers developing over South Auckland this afternoon. Stayed dry here, showers were mostly over the eastern side of Ak. Temperature range low19-max 28C and humid.
Are we in for another extended period of dry weather here?

Today was a mainly and fine day but quite cloudy as well and becoming much warmer than the previous days. Max here was 24.3C for a brief while this afternoon. The southerly came through with a hiss and roar around around 5pm with rain. Total today was 4.3mm to 10pm.

I used to do that quite often in my younger days. Also used to slowly rub my fingers over my eardrums to imitate the sound of thunder.

a bit of light rain with the wind change , 0.9mm
so that is now 15mm only for me for January
doesn't look any more rain for Jan, unless maybe a shower with the easterly change
so that will be the driest Jan since 1974 for me

Similar conditions here in Ashburton. Gusts are getting stronger as the day goes on.

Looks like well above average sunshine hours will be recorded for Jan over a large part of the North Island and the South west of thr South. I can't remember Ruakura ever going over 300hrs before in a calendar month but with 3 fine days forecast to end off the month, looks odds on to happen. Not that it's an entirely positive thing, as contributing a lot to the drying.

At last, a generally fine day with light winds. some high cloud around especially this evening making a nice sunset.
Today's maximum was 22.7C.
Looks like the weather will warm up, here from now on. Summer at last. Early February usually brings out the 'particularly hot' weather here.

Had a look in Cliflo and Ruakura has seen >300 hours before, but likely not since Jan 1993, although did not check every year with the transition between sites.
The max looks to be a whooping 315 hours in Jan 1950 (which apparently was a La Nina year). With three days to go, this year could have beaten that but would have needed 3 almost cloud free days to finish the month. Yesterday was partly cloudy in the morning would have ended that chance Today not a cloud to be seen so far. Suspect >300 hours this month is still likely.
