more and more sunshine here , warming nicely, now 23c
i am planning on an intercept
but I know from first hand on the ground knowledge that there is lots of traffic , people heading back home -> update, only a few bottlenecks, otherwise steady flowing, it seems

It's looking good on radar at the mo with heavy showers. Will it make it here is the question.

TS Warning now issued by MS for southern Waikato. Thunderstorm severity probably the same as the ones as issued by MS in North Otago/South Canterbury the other day.

This looked more ominous than the drizzle it produced, earlier this morning!

Can't complain about the Christmas and new year's weather though, it's been awesome.

A great little "show" from that storm but nothing violent about it in the end at least not here. Would have happily taken a bit more rain, only got 2-3mm.

A "Freezing" day here with grey and cold overcast conditions, southerly winds and drizzle especially this evening.
Today's maximum was 16.2C when it lightened up a bit this afternoon but mainly around the 12C mark. Had the heat pump on tonight to keep warm.
1.7mm of drizzle for today.

Went to Tirau today and got on the Severe Warned Storm, isolated flash flooding on roads with decent standing water enough for people to aquaplane as they dipped into the local service station. A bit of Lightning, but lots of rain obscured any decent observations of it.
Other than the rain rate,it was a typical airmas Thunderstorm which was good to finally to get a chase in (its been a looong time).

Convection surged NW as day progressed producing more heavy showers ahead, so followed that back into town, then caught up with Brian and Jamie for a wicked sunset.

Will we get any rain for January? I’m starting to think nothing is a real possibility. This ridge isn’t going to budge at let in the tropical lows hanging around not far from us.

Niwa rainfall map for last 15 days. Auckland airport with no rain for the last 21 days, great for the Summer holidays but we could do with some wet weather now.

Seems entirely possible now, unfortunately, Happened as recently as Jan 2020.

Even if not 0, then less than 10mm which with Jan ET rates, might as well be zero.

The models keep teasing at the long range end but as we get closer to the promised action it disappears.

Here's the latest tease.. which probably means that NZ will be covered by a large high on the 17th :-w

Note that GFS is the outlier at this stage. All the other main models still have this ex-TC scooting off just to the NE of NZ...

After a rather cool start for January, a fine but also cloudy day eventuated with NE breezes. Becoming warm later in the afternoon with today's maximum being 25.7C. Calm and mild evening with some scattered high cloud.

Hi - a quick query about MetService forecasts. I’m looking to go to Hanmer on Wednesday to go tramping. The high country forecast says cloudy with showers but the 3 day rain maps look dry. Which one do I believe.

Some good breaks in the cloud cover this afternoon with the temperature clocking in at 28.9C here, which makes it the hottest day locally since February 2020. Dew point was up to 22 earlier but has dropped several degrees since.

This has been something that has irritated me for a number of years, some of the areas that are included in the 'High Country' should not be, like my area and those further east to the coast. Centers like Hanmer, Culverden Cheviot etc need there own forecast area because they are not in the High Country and are often different weather wise.
As for what the weather will do Wednesday in and around Hanmer, I cant see there being any weather worries.
