Re: General January Weather
Will finish January on 4.2mm of rain. Less than 10mm since the 16th December. No rain in 10 days. Will be pushing less than 10mm for a period of 60 days soon.

Re: General January Weather
This is honestly quite depressing looking at the models, Waikato is looking like it's stuck in high pressure rain dead zone.
West Coast of the South Island significant rain totals over the next week with subsequent low pressure systems tracking south over the coast.

Re: General January Weather
Both Ruakura and Auckland Mangere have exceeded 300 sun hrs with a day to spare. Ruakura likely to end up about 310 hrs which will likely be second highest in available records unless I have missed some years. The downside is how much it will have added to the drying, no doubt.

I think this January has been the best weather month I have experienced for settled pleasant sunny weather and I include the 5 years I spent in Sydney in that.

Re: General January Weather
Good spotting. Sorry, should be 343.8 hrs, which appears to be from a new EWS recorder, but even that seems quite high. Last Dec it recorded 255.5 hrs, compared to 228.8 hrs for the old recorder. So may need some recalibrating?

Re: General January Weather
Not sure. This has by personal experience been an exceptional month for sun, as the Mangere and Ruakura readings show. I might have thought that the easterly winds would have kept Tauranga sun down a bit, to only be simillar to Auckland/Waikato. However it is sheltered in an Easterly too, takes a NE to bring cloud and moisture off the sea there.

Re: General January Weather
The current record for sunshine in any month is New Zealand is 356 at New Plymouth Airport in January 2015:
https://niwa.co.nz/education-and-traini ... te/extreme
In this mornings Taranaki Daily News the sunshine total for January at New Plymouth was reported as 358.5 hours.
I suspect there will be some other very high readings around the country that aren't yet reported. But for now New Plymouth has set a new record.
That's a nice way to defend the title of sunniest place in New Zealand which New Plymouth won in 2021!

Re: General January Weather
According to NIWA's notes, manual sunshine readings ceased at New Plymouth Aero on Dec 16, 2011, after an electronic sensor was installed there the previous week.

Re: General January Weather
There was quite a saga about the New Plymouth sunshine records. All faithfully reported by The Taranaki Daily News and Stuff.
The manual recorder was replaced with an electronic sensor in 2011. As soon as that happened the sunshine hours recorded rose by around 10% on the long-term averages from the manual system. Metservice didn't believe the sensor was accurate, took it away and tested it. They announced it was incorrect and replaced it with a new sensor which they had checked and confirmed was correctly calibrated. This occurred around 2013 or 2014.
The January 2015 record hours of 356 were with the replacement sensor. There has been no media coverage of any further testing or replacement of the senor so I presume it still remains and recorded:
* 2,592 hours in 2021 - the highest in the country
* 358.5 hours in January 2022 - which will be a new monthly record (if Tauranga or another location hasn't beaten it)
With the replacement and presumably correctly calibrated sensor sunshine hours in New Plymouth are consistently 10% up and sometimes over 15% on the long-term average. According to NIWA the 1981-2010 sunshine hours average average in New Plymouth is 2,197 hours.
I seem to recall reading that some other regions (but not all) have also had increases in hours with the new sensors - it would be interesting to see this analysed.

Jan average was 21.3 for my station, only some cooler overnight lows kept it from beating Jan 2018 (21.9), the average tmax (28.5) was actually higher.

Re: General January Weather
A bit late but in January we had 67.5mm of rain over 15 days. Maximum temperature was 27.8C on the 2nd. Lowest temperature was 7.3C on the morning of the 27th. No sound of the noise created by lightning but 2 days of clagg. Highest minimum was 17.3C on the morning of the 3rd. Lowest maximum was 15.8C on the 23rd. One boom was heard as a result from the Hunga - Tonga eruption.

Re: General January Weather
Reading the NIWA Jan summary, the highest temperature for the month 34.7 "lake Karapiro cws" was recorded only about 5km from my station. I recorded 33.4 on the same day. However the weather station used to record it, if the lat and long on clifo is exact would appear to be behind the power station down against the base of the dam. If so , it would heat up like an oven pit down there, not representative of the general climate so why would NIWA use such a site? I frequent the area and have never spotted a screened thermometer setup.

Re: General January Weather
I got 33.8 that day which smashed my previous record. So I think it’s a fair reading. We all recorded very close temps. Interestingly MetService from memory only forecasted 31 that day? So why was it so hot? 33-34 is very much a rare temp for Hamilton Waikato.cbm wrote:Reading the NIWA Jan summary, the highest temperature for the month 34.7 "lake Karapiro cws" was recorded only about 5km from my station. That station also seems to never record very low temps,it hardly goes below -1C on the most frosty winter mornings. I would just like to see its exact location and environment in order to give some context to its readings.jamie wrote:I got 33.8 that day which smashed my previous record. Re: General January Weather
I don't normally take NIWA's GPS coordinates too literally. In this case their Lake Karapiro CWS looks to be about 80 metres further NE, mounted on a tall pole (as they often are) on top of the NE end of the dam.cbm wrote: ↑Wed 09/02/2022 21:49 Reading the NIWA Jan summary, the highest temperature for the month 34.7 "lake Karapiro cws" was recorded only about 5km from my station.
