Not quite sure what you’re meaning. I was just passing on some information about why the wording has changed on the Metservice website.
Thanks for providing the info, I want responding to you specifically. My comment was a tongue-in-cheek reference to MetService's possible motivation. Just humour.
Metservice have lost the plot on this, for example if Nelson records 2 days of 26C (a whole 3C above the January average) then they start using the word ‘significant heat’. Just crazy, better to use terminology like that when the day is in the 95th percentile for that region for example…

No worries Tony! Now I understand. I’m a bit slow today - Mondays!

It’s only a trial at this stage. I wonder if we are able to provide feedback? I agree with your comments.

I hope so.

"Periods with conditions that feel markedly warmer" doesn't seem to be objective.

Years ago days over a certain temp. (possibly 35°C/95°F? could have been higher?) were simply forecast to be "very warm"

Beautiful scarlet sunset sky around 9:30pm last night :D

Odd to have a warm summer day in Chch that isn't norwest or easterly. Super nice time at the beach and the Avonside red zone this arvo.

High 31.6 here, still 31.1 now. I like warmth but this is too much. Sea today at Raglan only 17.6 inshore, no more than 19.5C out deeper. Inshore therefore was 5C cooler than 7 days ago.

Nice to have more breeze today even though the temps are about the same as yesterday. The thin high cloud has kept the lid on them getting into the 30's

Same down here Richard. Thin layers of altostratus keeping the temperatures in the twenties. I hate it when it is hot anyway, feel uncomfortable nowadays. Regarding Invercargill's heat, I remember being down there in February 2018 when it was hot in the thirties and in the news it said that places like the Warehouse and Briscoes had run out of fans. 8-o
Regarding meteorological terms for the media from MS, next thing they will come out with is the word "Freezing", not because there was a frost this morning but if you go outside the wind might be uncomfortably cold and the temperature may be in the low teens. The word "freezing' I have found is quite common with a lot of people in ordinary conversation these days with situation like this. <3

I just edged you. 31.8 here. Some really hot days this summer for us.

Where do you get those sea temp stats from?

As measured by the depth sounder /GPS on the boat when we are out fishing. I don't know how accurate it is against a calibrated thermometer but assume it's stable enough to compare readings from week to week/ month to month.

Today's maximum was 24.2C. Thin high cloud cover of the As type for much of the day with light southerly winds.
No hot weather as compared to other parts of the country especially up north.

We got the thinner part of that As layer today.
It would of been hot in Thornbury yesterday.

I went swimming out west yesterday and was super surprised the water felt as cool as it was. Perhaps explains why the temperatures have been more modest here with the sea breezes blowing in, it seems to cap the temperature at 27C

Already 30 here. I think I might break my own temp record today. Have never hit 32. Albeit very close on many occasions.

See New Plymouth is on 29.0 with a 30km Westerly!. Mine currently 32.4, 1.2C shy of record. I predict Jamie's will go past 33C.

Yes record for me and still rising. 32.8 right this minute. Should go 33 at least. Certainly the hottest day I’ve ever felt here. It’s a dry heat tho so it’s not uncomfortable. I think 28 and a 21 dew point is more uncomfortable.

Sea breeze just arrived thankfully. 33.8 which smashed my previous record of 31.9.
Amazingly it’s been a blue dome day today and this arvo I watched a few wispy clouds make their way inland from raglan. Right as they got on top of us the sea breeze arrived. Safe to assume the clouds were the sea breeze front.

That's at least 5-6C higher than any other PWS in your area. Is your gauge mounted on the roof or something?
