This sort of weather can be common in Canterbury, especially during La Nina. There's definitely been a lack of NW days though and so far no days above 30c heredarcyplumb wrote: ↑Wed 26/01/2022 07:34If it makes you feel any better John, we are stuck with the clagg-filled days here in Ashburton as well. Light winds and rather mild for a time early this afternoon with today's maximum being 20.1C. 0.7mm of drizzle for today.

Christmas and New Year were good around Chch but I guess not so inland. Greyer this week with a more easterly influence, sunny and humid late yesterday in Lyttelton.

Same here, it slid by only 10km to the East. Got 10 min of moderate rain about 10:30pm, and that was it.spwill wrote:This area missing much of the rain, Grey Lynn showing only 5mm so far for January and that may end up being the total rainfall for the month or close to it.
See what todays afternoon convergence can produce but the upper levels are warming through the day.

Re: General January Weather
Yes definitely a La Niña summer here. 2010/11 was similar if my memory is correct. We had a few days of NW winds back in spring but nothing compared to what we usually get.snowstormwatcher wrote: ↑Wed 26/01/2022 08:19This sort of weather can be common in Canterbury, especially during La Nina. Spent the New Year period in the MacKenzie high country and it was very warm and sunny away from the clagg on the plains...and from what I've seen its been sunny and hot up there since.Be interesting to see Twizel's daily highs this January compared to Chch....Chris W wrote:Christmas and New Year were good around Chch but I guess not so inland. Re: General January Weather
NIWA only has data for sites around the Te Anau Basin ranging between 1913 and 2013, and for the central western township itself between 1936 to 1994. However, prior to 2013, 1997 looks likely to be the Basin's driest January:teanaumalone wrote: ↑Tue 25/01/2022 14:10 anyone able to tell me what the driest January on record for Te Anau is? Only 8.8mm here this month and models showing only about another 1mm before end of the month. Its getting a little dry here. The Te Anau Basin is well browned off.
Te Anau Basin Jan 1997 Rainfall (mm)
6.0 .... Te Anau Aero, Manapouri - (14 km SW of township)
10.8 ... Te Anau Downs - (26 km N of township)
17.0 ... Te Anau, Wilderness Rd - (12 km E of township)
17.5 ... Manapouri - (19 km SW of township)
Note that January is normally Te Anau's wettest month, while its drier months normally occur around winter and spring, where single digit monthly rainfalls are a little bit more common - Te Anau Downs to the north recorded just 1.4mm in July 1977, and the township recorded just 3.3mm in Aug 1952. Annual average rainfall is about 1200mm.
Edit: Sorry, Te Anau Aero, Manapouri records are still active (starting 1991), so yes just 8.8mm mtd.

Direct hit here from the storm that rolled through this arvo. Info recorded on my Davis Vantage Pro 2 station. Bit of mess to clean up now . Hail was around 1cm mark.

Looks to be a decent squall line forming between Ashburton and Chch. Certainly looks a lot stronger on radar now than it did when it came through here a while ago.

Coming onto heavy rain in Lyttelton, radar looks good. We did get some heating earlier so no surprise to see MS raise the risk.

Re: General January Weather
Well that 50mm I kept getting told should happen was “great”. Not sure where the remaining 45 of the 50 went, but it sure as hell wasn’t here.
Holding on to hope we get some on the next system.

Re: General January Weather
Looks just like a spell of heavy rain, no thunder yet. Also no wind yet but looks from the above comments like that might change soon.

Re: General January Weather
Yeah when the rain came through Ashburton earlier there was hardly any wind but about 10-15 minutes later it really kicked off and is still going now. Gusting 60-70kph.

Yup, that didn't work out as it looked like it was going to. Who'd be a forecaster eh? Your rain will come Jamie, probably when you (or I) least expect it.
