Re: General February Weather
That's quite a sharp temperature drop south of Auckland this evening!

Re: General February Weather
Yes, feels like its been continuously warm since November so was quite a shock. The bonus was every open window became like an air conditioner outflow so have been able to cool house down for the night. Thought being in the cooler air would deliver more rain though.David wrote:That's quite a sharp temperature drop south of Auckland this evening!

Re: General February Weather
sudden increase in windspeed here (SE change) and temperature is dropping fast
this colder SE flow will undercut the warm NW flow aloft
and that is what is going to bring more rain...surely

Re: General February Weather
You're getting exactly what we got 3-4hrs ago. The strength of the SE surprised me. Some big gustsAwhituobs wrote:sudden increase in windspeed here (SE change) and temperature is dropping fast

. But so far it's not producing much rain. I didn't realise I was under an orange warning here now. 100-130mm would be huge and rare down in the main Hamilton basin.I do hear a bit more rain on roof now so maybe it's stating.

Re: General February Weather
I think that's because the 300km view is a section of the NZ composite radar image so includes the higher altitude returns from the adjacent radars, whereas the 120km image is from just the individual site radar.. could be wrong but it sure seems like that

Re: General February Weather
Another cool day here for early February with a generally cloudy day and light winds from the SE.
16.9c for today. Some isolated drizzle/light rain drops resulting a trace recording in the rain gauge for today.

Re: General February Weather
Broaderscale agreement between EC and UK and NCEP and BOM models for significant rainfall of totals up to 150-180mm within the next 24 hours, so not surprising Waikato has a Heavy Rain Warning.
Most significant heavy falls in the morning of the 7th, indicated around 6 to 10 AM
Widespread baseline totals from 60-80mm with pockets at much higher accumulations.

Re: General February Weather
The coastal hills here give good orographic rain effect in an easterly/NE wind flow
and because the whole coast line north of here is also very hilly , including the Waitakere ranges, it creates a lee trough rain effect enhancement
I see a station in the Waitakere ranges with over 100mm

Re: General February Weather
The rainfall from around 9am Saturday morning to around 10am Sunday morning in the westernmost strip of coastal Taranaki was phenomenal. The Taranaki Regional Council operates a network of weather station around the region where you can see data from these sites:
https://www.trc.govt.nz/environment/map ... t_24_hours
The Cape Egmont site, which is only a few metres above sea level and right on the coast recorded over 400mm in 24 hours to 10 am yesterday. And even more over a slightly longer period. Stuff reported "A total of 463.8mm of rain has now fallen at Cape Egmont between 2am Saturday and 1pm Sunday “with more still to come”.
For a North Island coastal site over 400 mm in 24 hours is very high. This is more than the coastal sites on the West Coast had from the same event. Its no wonder there was flooding in that part of Taranaki. Only a little further east there was less than half this rain. New Plymouth recorded around 160mm and Hawera around 190mm. Still impressive numbers but nothing like the coastal strip where the front stalled. We had many hours yesterday morning when the cold southeasterly behind the front had moved into South Taranaki while New Plymouth was still in the warm northeasterly in front of it. The boundary between the two air masses hardly moved.

An excellent 50mm here since 4pm yesterday, I can put the garden hose away.
I see there is some TS activity over the Tasman west of here this morning.

Re: General February Weather
At least 50mm here, would still take a second round from the comming weekend's system, as looks like it reverts to a stable pattern after that.

Re: General January Weather
Sure glad we got that rain last night, ended up a mainly dry day apart from a few drizzle showers. Nice to see more on the way towards the weekend

Re: General February Weather
About to tick over 70mm and still raining, and my Davis has had a tendency to under-report the big rainfall events. This has been an epic rain for the farms locally in terms of when it has come and that fact that the rain rate has not got too crazy, just a steady build up to a long period of substantial rain. There are hardly even puddles around the place as the dry ground has soaked it all up.

Re: General February Weather
MetService tweet giving rainfall totals for the Taranaki Peninsula for Sat/Sun - no total hours of duration given, unfortunately:
https://twitter.com/MetService/status/1 ... 6352228352
Some of these sites, as mentioned by others, are on the coast and not in the mountains. All that warm and humid air must be helping.
