Absolute mess here and locally. 1000’s of trees down. We have 10 trees down ourself. There would be 100 down in the farms at our immediate neighbours. Maize crops have especially taken a hit. My crop is coming off Tuesday (8weeks early) due to being flattened.

There must have been a real squeeze on the wind pressure through your area, which I suggest is when the low center, after coming ashore just north of Taranaki then tried to cross the central NI mountains but couldn't and was deflected north to sit over Hamilton city area, while a replacement low center formed off the Hawkes bay
at least that is how it seemed to unfold looking at the visible sat image animation

My Silverdale Spy reported power off from 7:30am to 2pm; very strong gusts there but no damage other than broken branches.

My sympathy to those who have lost crops and trees.

Yeah, kinda looks like that on the hand drawn midday synoptic chart that MS posted earlier (think that's 983 hPa western centre).

Yes the harvest here in Mid Canterbury will be poor..130mm of rain so far in February crops still standing in the field.Well forecasted by Tony months ago

Well that was a spectacular drive back through Taranaki. I left Tongaporutu just as the low centre was passing over, it was calm and drizzling heavily then, but within half an hour I was in a full gale southeasterly near Waitara with trees coming down. Carried on through New Plymouth through to Oakura where I was treated to the sight of enormous NW swells coming in against a storm force SE wind. Then got blocked by fallen trees on SH45 so had to take a back road through to Okato. Hellishly windy right through to about Whanganui before it eased off. Loved it

Just to add, one concerning moment on the way was when I got stopped by automatic traffic lights at roadworks, right next to a row of trees that were shrieking in the wind and pelting the car with twigs. I was probably only stopped for 5 mins but it felt like an eternity before I could get away from those trees. It certainly felt as if they were about to come down across the road and I sure was happy to get out of there!

One more pic, this one from Oakura where that huge NW swell (about 6 metres) was coming in against the SE wind. Spectacular viewing!

And a screenshot of the weather record at New Plymouth airport yesterday. Remarkable not just for the wind but also for the overnight temperatures preceding the arrival of the remains of Dovi.

I think as we look back the models handled this system quite well, with a few runs sending it into the mid Tasman but by and large the path and related impacts was fairly well cast

The warnings for here were late. We’ve not had wind like this before. WELL the local lines company has said it’s a mess and not seen anything like it.

As you can see from my semi-regular posts on here, it was only on Friday morning that a path across the central North Island started to get locked in. Anything other than generic warnings wasn't really possible till then.

Have we ever seen an ex-cyclone pass eastwards from north Taranaki across the central North Island before? Anyone? I don't recall that. (Not to say its never happened, just that I can't recall it). So, I would say we really haven't seen anything like it before.

I can remember Cyclone Drena crossing Taranaki (I was there at the time -- 1997 I think) but it might have been on a more southerly track?

Yes, I think MS had 'Strong Wind Watches' out for Auckland, Northland, Great Barrier Island, Buller, Marlborough, Nelson and Wellington as early as Thursday morning. However, Waikato was one of the last to be added when included in a 'Strong Wind Warning' on Saturday morning.

Yes, Drena in Jan 1997, Daman in Feb 1992, Simon in Mar 1980 and Hal in Apr 1978 all followed similar paths across the central North Island. Perhaps also Esau in Mar 1992 and Norman in Mar 1977, which were just in little bit further north.

Drena was quite different to Dovi. Hal & Daman very similar. Simon almost spot on the same as Dovi.
