Lots of thunder and lightning here. And with a cooler temperature it is all a very welcome change except I can see that my lawns went postal overnight.

Driving back into Auckland there was quite a bit of flooding but that will clear quickly as rain has stopped.

Metservice wrote: At 11:37 am, MetService weather radar detected severe thunderstorms near MARAMARUA, TE KAUWHATA, MANGATAWHIRI, MIRANDA, WAERENGA and THE HUNUA RANGES.

These severe thunderstorms are moving towards the south, and are expected to lie near HAMILTON, HUNTLY, NGARUAWAHIA, TE KAUWHATA, OHINEWAI, WAITERIMU, TAUPIRI, ORINI, GORDONTON and WHITIKAHU at 12:07 pm and near HAMILTON, CAMBRIDGE, GORDONTON, LEAMINGTON, MATANGI, TEMPLE VIEW, HAMILTON AIRPORT and EUREKA at 12:37 pm.

These thunderstorms are expected to be accompanied by torrential rain and damaging wind gusts.

Torrential rain can cause surface and/or flash flooding about streams, gullies and urban areas, and make driving conditions extremely hazardous.

Very strong wind gusts can break branches from trees, damage roofing, and make driving hazardous especially for high-sided vehicles and motorcycles.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in force for AUCKLAND, GREAT BARRIER ISLAND, COROMANDEL PENINSULA and WAIKATO.

The National Emergency Management Agency advises that as storms approach you should:
- Take shelter, preferably indoors away from windows;
- Avoid sheltering under trees, if outside;
- Get back to land, if outdoors on the water;
- Move cars under cover or away from trees;
- Secure any loose objects around your property;
- Check that drains and gutters are clear;
- Be ready to slow down or stop, if driving.
During and after the storm, you should also:
- Beware of fallen trees and power lines;
- Avoid streams and drains as you may be swept away in flash flooding.[/quote

David wrote:Some PWS inland from Whangarei showing some insane numbers. This one showing 140mm in an hour earlier today :eek: similar numbers on nearby stations too https://www.wunderground.com/dashboard/pws/IWHANG185
The whole NZ record for 1hr is 134mm at the Cropp River! I guess being a PWS it won't count but alignment with neighbouring PWS makes this quite credible.

Rain now stopped with 114mm. 60 of that fell in 60 minutes. Suspect it was more but the wireless connection I noticed was missing the off data packet in the peak rainfall.

An area of convergence on the North Shore currently, some thunderstorm activity has formed with it.

The north shore convergence line just now was pretty good - plenty of thunder, and just missed the bulk of the rain. Furious scud action

Will keep an eye Wednesday for thunderstorm chances. The upper cool trough will be crossing, plenty of low level moisture and some convergence showing. See how it looks on the day.

I see the 56.6mm in one hour at Auckland airport yesterday was a record there, the previous one hour record there was 53mm.
Leigh holds the record for the Auckland region at 109mm/hr, 30 May 2001.
