Stunning day in Ashburton. The kids were outside in their togs running under the sprinkler. That’s got to be a first in April for us! Great night for some evening rugby down at Celtic.

Re: General April Weather
Coming onto rain at the moment.
I can't understand when the forecasts say that with the southerly change, the rain will move north but when if you check the rain radar, it's still moving from NW/West to the East to SE.?

Re: General April Weather
Bugger all thunder around today except I just heard on the news that a thunderclap disturbed a dog in Queenstown this morning and went missing but luckily the dog was found.
Generally a fine warm blue day here today, with today's maximum being 24.6C. Not much wind but the southerly strengthened for a while in bouts from 3:30pm and then this evening. Clouding from the west from mid-afternoon.
Overthrow rain early this morning and this evening with 5mm for today.

Re: General April Weather
doesn't look like much rain for western upper NI from the incoming front
unless the front slows down as it crosses,,a possibility..slowed down by the system to the east of the upper NI (which got close enough to bring rain to eastern coromandel)
we really need rain..with a big high pressure to come in (although there is a chance of easterly surge or convergence rain around the top of the high pressure)

Have been watching this nice cloud develop over the last 20 mins or so. The angle of the sunlight looks really nice at this time of the morning.

Have been in Queenstown for the past few days. Nice dusting of snow on the peaks this morning. Rather brisk outside compared to recent weather

^ How was yesterday morning's thunderstorm in Queenstown, which the OTD has naively labelled a 'weather bomb'...?
Comments on social media described the "loudest thunder ever", and "blinding lightning, heavy rain and thunder shaking the house".

Lightning strike cuts power, slip closes road - OTD
Friday, 22 April 2022
A large slip at Boundary Creek caused by a weather bomb which hit the Queenstown Lakes area yesterday morning is yet to be cleared.
The weather event included a lightning bolt which struck the Frankton grid exit point just before 7am and knocked out power to more than 12,000 Queenstown residents. The bolt was said to have made buildings move.
The slip at Boundary Creek was caused by a culvert washed out by heavy rainfall and continues to force the closure of Glenorchy-Queenstown Rd.

I saw that too. Three houses apparently. However no flood warning when I looked on the ECAN website this morning.

Re: General April Weather
River was not exactly that high at 1500Cumecs. Does not bode well for future of the Huts if 1500cumecs is a threat. At a guess this will be a consequence of Low river flows narrowing the mouth, so much so that when the river flooded it requires more energy over longer period to blow it open and the backed up water goes down the lagoon. River for some time has been very low at 70 cumecs if you believe the reporting, mean flow is 221cumics.

Re: General April Weather
Heard the boom of thunder as it woke me up, but didn’t notice any other rumbles. Blockout blinds prevented me seeing the light show. Power seemed to be out for a couple of hours.Nev wrote: ↑Fri 22/04/2022 09:33 ^ How was yesterday morning's thunderstorm in Queenstown, which the OTD has naively labelled a 'weather bomb'...?

Re: General April Weather
With all those thunderstorms warnings for New Zealand issued for yesterday, it looks as though the Queenstown area was the only area that was activated with lightning activity.

It's about time they put the lightning strikes page for Trustpower on the MS Website ?Nev wrote: ↑Fri 22/04/2022 18:50Was a little more widespread than that according Blitzortung and this tweet from MS at 8:20am yesterday morning...NZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote: ↑Fri 22/04/2022 17:39 With all those thunderstorms warnings for New Zealand issued for yesterday, it looks as though the Queenstown area was the only area that was activated with lightning activity.

Re: General April Weather
A wee bit of rain overnight but generally clearing to become a cool but partly cloudy day with light SW to SE winds.
Today's maximum was just 14.9C a bit cooler to yesterday's warmth.

Re: General April Weather
No rain for two weeks. Winter is going to be tough. A real green drought but only just green. New grasses are failing and pasture growth into winter looks next to zilch. Really hoping for a warm wet June to play catch-up.
