Wind has been southerly in Ashburton for a few hours now but has remained mostly sunny. Certainly noticed a chill in the air when it changed.NZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote: ↑Wed 25/05/2022 15:26 Where's today's southerly? Missed here, been a fine day with a light easterly. ?

Modelling indicating 20C possible on the 1st. I’ve never recorded 20 in any winter month

Bitterly cold here today. 6 degrees and overcast with no wind. The first day that has genuinely felt like winter for the year.

Me neither, can reach 19 but 20.0 is a bridge too far. I suspect some official Auckland site has exceeded 20.0 in a winter momth however, especially in late August when sun gets stronger again.

Re: General May Weather
I saw the same thing again quite strongly yesterday evening from just S of Palmy North. A wispy texture high in the twilight sky and an amazing grade of colours from bright yellow near the horizon through to magenta overhead. I'm almost certain that it's volcanic ash in the stratosphere.JP. wrote: ↑Tue 24/05/2022 16:33Yes, the sunrises (particularly) and sunsets in Christchurch have been beautiful lately. I get up for a 30 min run at 6:45am and the sunrises the past few weeks have been fantastic gradients from yellow>orange>purple>blueharleyb wrote: ↑Mon 23/05/2022 22:16 Has anyone noticed the strange morning and evening twilight skies in the last few weeks? Very bright with a faint wispy texture at what looks like a very high altitude. Last time I saw anything like this was after the Australian bush fires. The photo here was taken from Mahia Peninsula this morning. Could it be ash from the Tongan eruption?20220523_065205.jpg
Here's an average cellphone picture I took 12th May @ 7:08am
Vivid sunsets have also been seen in South Africa; even though this article is a bit over 2 months old, it's probably describing the same phenomenon.

Tonight’s sunset was very pink. Odd colour for a cloudless sky.

Re: General May Weather
Same here in Ashhurst tonight. The vivid pink above the low cloud is the twilight sky, not high cirrus or any other cloud. And it's bright, too, much more so than normal twilight.

Re: General May Weather
Overcast with some drizzle or light rain around sunrise but clearing away during the morning to become a blue dome day.
Another purply clear sky sunset.
Today's maximum was 11.7C.
Frost on the grass this evening.

Re: General May Weather
On track for an unsettled week next week for much of NZ particularly for western/northern NZ where thunderstorms look likely on some days.
Clear cool conditions here today, easterly cloud is visible over north Auckland, Northshore Auckland having an overcast morning

When/where NW converges with NE often brings hazardous weather.

There is increasing subtropical moisture combined with upper level cooling late Sunday/ Monday, a period to watch.

After a white frost this morning, a fine blue dome day eventuated with not much wind.
Clear sky sunset not as spectacular as the previous days.
