the euro model shows a warm front/jet stream/ disturbed upper level setup for the Waikato and Auckland for the weekend (sandwiched between a high north and south of it)..lot of rain potential
originating as a result of twin tropical cyclones in the Indian ocean (north and south of the Equator) which caused a westerly wind burst (NIWA talked about this) and which invigorated the Queensland easterly trough, and its an off shoot from that

Apparently there was a downpour over the CBD in Timaru on Monday evening according this morning's Timaru Herald flooding some businesses.
Also the railway through the Buller gorge was closed by massive slips that looked like the ones that closed the Gisborne Line on Sunday. Don't know if they will repair it or not as the only traffic through there is export coal to India China or Japan as coal is now a dirty word as far as climate change goes.

I'm surprised that no snow fall on the mountains west of here during the resent trough, the only fresh snow to be seen is on the seaward Kaikoura rangers.

Could be a frost here in the morning, down to 3C at 1045pm.
After yesterday's clagg cleared away overnight, it was a blue dome day here with not much wind. 14.5C for today.
Interesting purplely skies at sunset in clear skies.

Kiwirail are quite clever at expediting rail track repairs when the urgency is needed for economic reasons

Some warm nights for Auckland next week as the weather turns humid from Sunday-Thursday. Ridgng over northern NZ will weaken the frontal activity there.

Wasn't the sky observed to go purplish for a time after the Chilean volcanic eruption in 2011? -

Not the first time I've heard reference to 2011 this year. What I wouldn't give for a repeat of the winter of 2011 here in Canterbury

Hopefully some decent rain here next week, we need it. Very moist air arriving here from tomorrow with upper cooling from mid week, see what next week can bring us. Currently there is cold air in the modelling to finish next week with high country snow.
