A lot of electrical activity on Friday (20th May) morning for the SW of the north island. MetService tweet attached with activity snapshot at just after 8am.

Looks like tornadic damage in Levin.

Local chatter has damage to shop windows in Cambridge town centre and one person trapped in car under fallen tree from that line.

As it transpired, the trapped person was not in a car and sadly didn't survive. Damage around town seems to be limited to just a couple of spots so I don't know if it was anything more than an intense burst of straight line winds.
