Yea I’m already 70 which is on the back of 100 in the last 10 days of may. Would never know we’ve had that much.
Even though we are now getting the rain we needed, lots of autumn sown grass is still germinating. Each week on my pasture walk around the farm I’m still seeing new seedlings emerging that were planted in mid March. This winter and spring will be a train wreck. It’s going to be bloody tough farming for the next few months. Very costly to buy in a huge amount of food just to get through winter. All because the rains came 6 weeks too late.

Fine earlier on this morning but increasing high cloud from the north to NW with NW developing during the day. Mild.
Today's maximum was 18.7C.
Came onto rain around 6pm with 7mm falling, Clearing away to the SE and becoming fine this evening.
Some flashes away to the NW this evening.

I hope this does not appear to be a silly question, but I often see the expression "spill over rain" mentioned in these monthly weather threads as applied to the South Island. What does this mean?

Rain spilling over the mountains basically, fronts coming from the west hit and drag over the mountains and spill over the otherside I'm guessing, not 100% sure.

Probably caused by the updraft and going over the top and wouldn't go to far? I'm usually here to read and learn.
But I enjoy it, I'm sure some others have more detailed info on this.

I call it 'throw over' rain as what great amounts have been dumped on the West Coast, extra falls from this seem to come over the Southern Alps and rain in eastern areas, like today for example. Traditionally NW rain usually dumps it's load on the West Coast and then as the moisture has dried out of it, continues as a Foehn wind over the Canterbury Plains. There are similar effects like this in Europe and USA.

The only silly question is the one you don't ask... Thought the excerpts below from a past NIWA report may be of interest...

https://niwa.co.nz/news/new-zealand%E2% ... -mountains
Past research has indicated there is a relationship between temperature and the amount of precipitation that spills over the mountains into the headwaters of the major South Island hydro-storage catchments. The colder it is, the greater the 'spillover' precipitation. This effect is generally attributed to the greater distance a cold snowflake will drift in the wind compared to a warm rain drop.

The headwaters of the Lake Pukaki catchment are considered to be particularly susceptible to this effect, as a large proportion of precipitation there falls as snow.

Much climate change research assumes that there will be generally more rain falling as the world warms up. "But in some locations," says Dr Kerr, "there will be less. To date the assumption has been that in a warmer climate the hydro lakes will get more rainfall, but if this temperature-spillover relationship is significant, the hydro lakes may actually get drier – that means more expensive electricity. By the same token, and more importantly from a hazard management point of view, West Coast villages like Franz Josef may end up with an even greater likelihood of flooding.

It will be the rain east of the Alps on a west/NW flow. With the air descending off the Alps and the blocking affect of the Alps rain clouds tend to dissipate quickly as they move east from the main divide along the Alps. I'm picking moisture in the higher levels plays the biggest part in how much rain goes east.

In your link Simon it says -

My thinking would be that the extra evaporation from a warmer Tasman would far outweigh the small amount of spillway rainfall not spreading out as far, its just a drop in a bucket to what falls within the first 20-30km. Yes I could see maybe less rainfall further from the main divide, but it still has to fall and it still will within that divide/20-30km zone.

Thanks for all the replies about spill over rain. Judging by the height of the Alps, I am guessing that the rain will fall from Altostratus cloud and would therefore be generally light, except close to the mountains?

All the models ( at least the runs that Windy is displaying) are showing a deep low approaching from the North. This is quite different fron the summer TC where typically one (often GFS) would 1 week out show a direct hit and the others nothing.

Apart from the thunderous downpour in Upper Hutt around lunchtime, unstable conditions now starting to ease up here in the Hutt/Wellington region with winds easing and weather clearing this evening.
