nice to have the wind back down to normal speeds (40 knot gusts instead of 70kts!!)
nice to have a break from the rain.. we at 158mm for the month to date (i.e average for June and only half way through June)

Looking at a trip down to mt cook national park this weekend. Looks to be some high pressure around and calmer weather from what I'm looking at. Would be majestic down their if it is sunny and clear

Beautiful sunset last night, apricot and mauve;
this morning the north-eastern sky glowing with rose and lilac, long before sunrise.
These skies are spectacular!

The sunsets have been amazing, last nights in particular from Wellington was incredible. Was working from home, and on a call from 430-530 looking exactly in the direction of the sunset, and it certainly was more entertaining than the meeting!!

NIWA have just done a blog post re the sunsets, suggesting the link is most likely to the Hunga Tonga—Hunga Ha’apai eruption.

And an image they posted on twitter that was not in the blog post:

That's interesting, I noticed last night's twilight was similarly colourful. I've noticed these bright twilight skies for ages now and have suspected that it is ash from Tonga. The intensity of the colours also seems to wax and wane a bit. I recall the ash in the sky here from that Chilean eruption a few years ago, and how it reappeared every week or so as it completed several circuits of the southern hemisphere before it dissipated. Maybe the same periodic thing is happening here.
Pic from last night at Tongaporutu showing the mauve colours:

A cold SE flow will affect NZ early next week, our first cold spell of the Winter in the north. There has been nothing close to a frost here yet.

the very deep low from the north for monday is in all the models again!
(but the models are flip flopping so nothing is set in concrete yet)

Flopping around like a fish out of water- which perhaps is what the models are at the minute?

Seems hard to get a read into what it all means for the skifields, a one off big dump or is there something to follow to consolidate the base and add more layers?

Either way I'd be worried about avo's in the back country right now.

Was drizzly at times this morning in Akaroa, but sun has come out this afternoon between clouds.

About 5 minutes before the change moved through this morning. Stunning colours, iPhone camera work not too flash.

^ Ya, there was a brief red sunrise and then I guessed there'd be a rainbow but hidden behind the neighbour's tall shrubbery for me.
Has become very overcast and dull/dark with rain, 8°C.
Been chilly most of the day.

Quite a cloudy day here and very still. Finally some colder nights coming up from tonight. Photo from my run just now
