I presume there will be a period tonight as the next active front moves over with brief heavy rain for the plains, where winds could get up around 100kmh in the city.
Also could be a bolt of elevated lightning or two, this front crossing tonight is going to be quite active especially for the west coast.
Must of been some gale force winds overnight here too, quite a few branches down in west Christchurch.

For southern ski fields it is going to be the best start to the season for snow depth in many years.

Ended up with a mostly dry day here, max18C. We did catch a heavy shower at my place around 8am.

Yeah, pretty lacklustre showing up here. I’ve recorded 2mm the last 2 days

You’ve not done very well out of this weather pattern at all David. I’m 93mm for the month and you are 44mm.
I’ve had 210ish mm in the past 3 weeks. Surface soil can’t take any more but plenty of dry soil just a couple cm down. Need a few fine days now to let the water permeate through the soil.

Fine but rough weather up here today with strong and gusty NW winds throughout the day and the occasional showers moving across with some laced with the sound of thunder around noon today in Upper Hutt where we were today.
Very windy up here in the Belmont Hills with some lightning flashing away to the west this evening.
Thunderstorm moving over Wellington as I type.

Total 26mm so far from this system. This mornings showers have been accompanied by strong winds which is unusual, normally the winds die right out when spillover showers arrive.

Noticing the radar that shows more rain east side of the divide than on the West Coast, the showers west side are small bands where this side much broader

Remember that radar has a hard time showing rainfall patterns in complex terrain.

I'm looking at what is coming in from the sea western side comparing them what is showing once the showers move east of high country.

Just saw an awesome lightning strike not far from here in Flat Bush as the leading edge of the line came through. Unfortunately little miss 4 is crying, as she missed the lightning.

Couple of good rumbles before it arrived here then minute or two of gusty winds and heavy rain. A few flashes and a few more rumbles as it passed over for good measure. Nice to finally get a bit of action. My bubba also did not enjoy that!

Nice to hear a few decent booms with that band going through! But not much rain from it locally, as seems to be the norm of late...

Went for a drive to the Ashburton Lakes this morning, snow level about 800-900m on the eastern ranges but down to 650m once past the Ashburton Gorge. Lots of water and slush around.

Overnight thunderstorms clearing away this morning but remaining rather showery with long fine periods and rather raw NW winds here today up in the Wellington region.
