These circular echoes have gradually appeared on the New Plymouth radar overnight. Could it be picking up the heavy swell, which is forecast to rise to 7 metres?

yes, that is the swell alright i would suggest
it shows just as clutter on the 300km radar (which you can see of the Kaipara harbour too (i.,e waves on the bar)

Large Snowfalls to areas that dont always see good snow. Twizel reporting 20cm today. Snow falling across the South down to sea level in the south and 300m mid Canterbury. Certainly been a hell of a system. Lindis reporting 1m at the summit. Arthurs Pass seeing 60cm from last 48hours. TC reporting 1.5-2m and the biggest storm for them in 20years. Temple Basin believed to be around 3m. Absolutely massive. 80cm to near Forest Lodge. Currently snowing to around Castlehill. Some people thought this was a nothing out of the ordinary system. I think its proven itself to be a very rare system. Ski Field operators are fizzing as this has set all the south Island fields up very well.

Just had an update from my parents who live only 300m away from where there was damage at Waikanae Beach last night. They said it was the worst night of weather they have experienced in over 23 years of living on the coast. Thundery squalls of rain through the night, with hail, and big gusts of wind. They hardly slept all night, and were genuinely worried about damage to their house. Recorded the highest ever gust on his weather station of 59.4 knots, close to the time the damage occurred. My Dad had just been out for a drive, and thankfully houses did not get damaged, but significant damage to fences and trees in a very localised area. Big crew of locals out helping with the clean up.

He also went to have a look at the erosion of the beach front dunes, and he said it is VERY significant. He made someones day when he was checking out the dunes, by getting blown over in a 40 knot gust! (he had his hand held wind meter with him). He is going to go back down later this afternoon and try and get better photos of the erosion damage when it is low tide.

Concerns for the town of Ngakawau on the West Coast of the South Island. The sea wall has been breached this morning, flooding town. Reports of a possible tornado as well. Buller Emergency Management has been activated with planning underway for high tide this evening (expected to be worse than this morning).

Really feels like Christchurch has completely missed this entire system. 10mm of rain over the past 5 days, nothing really strong wind wise. Happy the ski fields get a good dump to start the year

Thunderstorm through Upper Hutt around noon today delivered a huge torrential downpour before moving away to the east.
Not photographical these storms sadly.

Well that bit of storm watching at the bach didn't quite go to plan. We ended up losing our entire retaining wall and quite a bit of the front lawn too. A big repair job ahead. I guess I need to be more careful about what I wish for... :(

Yes, could see those (and a few minutes before) up around Whangaparaoa way from here.

I see Whangaparaoa also had peak gusts to 109 km/h around Noon yesterday, as did Ardmore Aero with 106 km/h, while Auckland Aero and Whenuapai Aero were up to 93 km/h. Bean Rock Lighthouse also around 120km/h.

Meanwhile New Plymouth Aero also had gusts to 117 km/h yesterday arvo.

Just thought it would be worthwhile capturing this against this event.....
Gradient from 1023mb off the NSW coast, to 932mb at the centre of the low below NZ (rough estimate from Google maps about 3000km)
No wonder its been a tad breezy!
