A different July to last year which was particularly sunny and dry here, this year cloudy and particularly wet.

I noticed that MS mentioned a possibility of thunderstorms this evening around here???
Totally fine here with some flat cloud around???
One of the most unlikely conditions for thunderstorms to form especially this time of year.
Maybe we might get a bolt out of the blue or the dark

I've seen a flash of lightning over Taiaroa Head just a few minutes ago. Following on from a decent shower passing over Dunedin.

Overcast overnight with a bit of drizzle early this morning but clearing away to become a fine and sunny day.
Some scattered mid-range cloud layers moving east this afternoon but harmless skies. 13.4C for today.
Fine evening. Not much wind.

Beautiful day, not something we’re used to lately! Sunny 16C, feeling almost like Spring

yes, weather today is like better than I expected
nearly 17c here
its almost like this new system developing in the tasman has suppressed any activity ahead of it over the north island

I am at 1.8c above "average" for July...which is a lot as the winter months tend to be not as variable for temperature I find?

Used this good weather to install my new VP2 tipping mechanism and new “aerocone”. Used a spade and a bubble level indicator (the larger one to the right of the spoon) to also do a little adjustment since it wasn’t perfectly level (the tiny built in one cracked and leaked many years ago)

Hopefully plenty of rain in August to do a new set of manual gauge comparisons 🙂

Same here, been up to 17.5 and sun almost the whole time. Today was meant to be rain all day going by forecast only 2-3 days ago.

That design is different to my 2017 model, mine has two cups in a seasaw arrangement.

Yep that was the standard one until the new single spoon mechanism was released in mid 2019. My station is over 12 years old, the new part is compatible and it's pretty easy to switch out the old for the new

After a frost overnight, thick high cloud moved across and remained all day with it cold and gloomy. Only 6.1C for today.
Came onto rain finally after 9pm, with a bit of a SW blowing. 2.9mm for today.

Nice passionfruit vine. Like our one last summer. Now looking a bit pathetic with a frostcloth covering it on fine winter nights.
We have it on a sunny side of the house along a brick wall which heats up even on sunny winter days. it does well there in summer.

Seeing better rain readings now, 7.1 manual vs 6.4 on the VP2 this morning. The gauges aren’t right next to each other so that could well be within margins of error (and 6.4 lines up with nearby stations too  )

July 2022 was one of NZ's wettest July's on record for most places. It was, however, also relatively warm, particularly for the North Island.

MS's quick review of July...
MetService July 2022 Brief SummaryRainfall records smashed

Rainfall records were smashed in many regions during July, due to frequent Lows spawning out of the Tasman Sea. Timaru, Christchurch and Blenheim all recorded their wettest month on record (at any time of year), with a State of Emergency being declared for flooding in Pleasant Point/Temuka Ward on the 20th. It was the wettest July on record for Levin, Palmerston North, Masterton, Wellington (Kelburn), Wanaka and Dunedin, with the Kelburn record particularly notable in observations since 1927. It was the second wettest July on record for Kerikeri (with 572 mm of rain recorded!), Auckland, Whitianga, Rotorua, Taumarunui, Nelson, Ashburton and Oamaru.

Above average monthly temperatures were recorded across the North Island and upper South Island, while closer to average monthly temperatures were observed elsewhere in the South Island. However, a monthly average doesn’t capture the significant snowfall seen last month – we’ve seen the best snow in a decade at higher elevations, with multiple, heavy snowfalls affecting the South Island.
