Hmmm I thought this year has been very dry, I seem to find Jeff's station at Hoon Hay a lot more accurate than the Metservice airport site.
Jeff's rainfall
Jan: 29.6mm (expected 45mm)
Feb: 79.4mm (expected 36.6mm)
Mar: 25.4mm (expected 54.1mm)
Apr: 16.2mm (expected 72mm)
May: 21.8mm (expected 57mm)
Jun: 21.8mm (expected 83mm)
194.2mm of an expected 347.7mm
So by those numbers we are circa 55% of expected rainfall so far this year, only 20.6mm so far in July but I'm looking forward to that changing over the next week.
As Tony says there are some interesting anomolies, and Jeffs is one of them this year- a standout outlier! I know as I live in the suburb next door. I think theres been a lot more of the Banks Peninsula shadow effect than normal in a really localised band this year from Cashmere to Tai Tapu.
Most of our wider hood has had much more rain.
MS evidence is average to above in the region, especially on Banks Peninsula at the Cooptown site- must be running close to double average there
Year to dates as at 30 June:
ChCh Aero = 345.6mm
Lyttelton = 348.4mm
Cooptown (Banks Peninsula) = 649.3mm

Amuri basin around 200-250m ASL? Really don't think you will see any snow there from this event. Looking like a good dump for areas above 500m.Tekapo/Twizel/Ashburton lakes etc. Been a good Winter for snow In Twizel with 2 decent falls.so far, Often this area misses out on snow due it's sheltered location.

I’ve started thinking of the climate in Auckland as the wet season and the dry season. I know it isn’t really like that in the official way, like Darwin or somewhere like that. But it sure feels like it the last few years, with what feels like months and months of dry weather, and then rain seemingly all winter.

You are right, I got mixed with my heights above sea level, its 235m here. This area ranges from 175m on the eastern side of the Amuri to up 327m.

Wow, that’s impressive. Even taking into account a potential 25% under reading on my station we’d be at about 275mm in the last 6 weeks

Heavy rain rates starting to come through here now.Ground is fairly saturated already.
Some patches of surface flooding in the usual areas along roads becoming prominent.I will imagine a few trees might fall if the wind picks up later in the day.

Snow level creeping down now, Friend just informed me it's snowing but not setting in Fairlie at 300m asl.heavy rain here at 100m ASL with 16mm so far.

Temperature slowly dropping here 4.8 degrees steady rain and 1 degree in Methven.Heavy snow on the ground already at the Ashburton lakes 700 metres

Temperature level has just started to drop here from 7°C and presently on 6.2.
Continuous moderate to heavy bursts of rain.

Checked my manual gauge just now, 45.5mm for this event here (38 on the VP2 so not quite as big a discrepancy this time)

The event is over for us, 64mm here. We look to the next system late Thursday/ Friday which may bring some thunderstorms.

New norm i think, will get harder and harder to empty the lagoons as seas rise and lower river flows cannot hold them open. Three days ago they had a digger opening a mouth at the Rakaia to lower the lagoon levels
