Nice virga there Darcy. Shows signs of the cold air aloft

A NZ Herald article about our current La Nina, unfortunately it's behind a paywall.

After a mild start, the colder southerly wind came through at 1130am with a dramatic cooling of temperature.
Today's maximum was 15.6C but this afternoon the temperature was mostly in the 5C range with rain. Some sleet at times around 3pm.
Rain easing this evening but remaining cold with it being 2.6C at 10pm.
17mm of rain for today.

Super happy with my new rain gauge mechanism’s first proper test. 32mm in both the manual gauge and on the VP2 :D

Looks like a lengthy spell of settled weather is arriving for the majority of the South Island. Great chance to slowly start drying out

That active storm around Orewa and another north of Wellsford have been going ballistic since about 7:30pm.
Quiet a spectacular view from here... lights up the sky for miles!

Yeah, some flashes bigger than others. Also heard some distant rumbles.
Seems to have settled down a bit now.

A sort of a wintry day with wintry showers this afternoon and this evening. Not as good as in the old days when I used to enjoy lying in the bath and hearing the hail on the roof. Today's maximum was 7.9C with 8.4mm of rain and other sorts of precipitation.
Cold winds between SW and East.

Those T-storms north of Auckland lasted off and on until about midnight.
Then got woken up about 2:30am by about 20 minutes of thunder north of Waiheke.

Yeah, was wondering why MS never issued any real time warnings with that amount of activity?

I was busy last night otherwise I would have gone up to Owera. The lightning was still visible from here at 11.30pm.

Yes, Great Barrier Island in the firing line for heavy showers and thunderstorms currently.

See what can over land this afternoon, moisture /instability sitting between Auckland and Whangarei.
