It's 2/3 of the way into the month, and temperatures are below normal over the greater part of NZ. Warmer weather may change that by the end of the month, but otherwise we could be looking at the first cooler than normal month this year.

Another sort of mild fine day with some scattered high cloud. Light southerlies.

Some thunderstorm risk showing for Friday, see how this looks in the modelling tomorrow. Bay of Plenty/Coromandel to Auckland up to Northland might be where the main risk is going to be.

Brief heavy shower here with a rumble of thunder around St Heliers area a short time ago. Developed really fast on the rain radar!

Report of someone injured by a lightning strike in Dannevirke yesterday afternoon. There was a video on the Herald that captured a decent flash and thunderclap in Dannevirke too, wonder if it was the same strike?

A couple of photos of the storm over SE Auckland yesterday afternoon, formed on the convergence between NW and NE flow. More instability showing for northern NZ today, the instability more widespread across the NI tomorrow with the upper level cold trough.

Tomorrow looks like an interesting day around here with unstable conditions under cold upper level air and convergence setting up from Northland across Auckland down into Waikato.

The dew point in Auckland is a moist 13C. See how good the convergence is today.
Looking ahead it is interesting the lack of westerly pattern in the model outlook given we are in full Spring now.
