Yes the NW wind here is a cool wind compared to what you guys get, does keep temps a bit more steady. Come summer time when the NE is the main player, its the other way around.

Another interesting observation comparing the two plains ( Amuri and Canterbury) are the differences between plant species, most springs the weeping and crack willows are normally a week or so earlier here, but cabbage tree flowering is always way earlier on the Canterbury plains to here

A cooler start to the month, including an unseasonal 'polar blast', kept the overall national average temp to near normal.
MetService October 2022 Brief Summary – Under the yoke of La Nina
High pressure was never too far away in October, especially for South Island. La Nina conditions in the tropical Pacific likely nudged our weather maps in this direction. High pressure brings mainly fine and settled weather, and we certainly saw plenty of that. Notable exceptions bookended the month. A low barrelled across North Island early in the month with widespread rain followed by a very cold southerly blast which brought snow to low levels across South Island and the lower North Island. A Southern Ocean low late in the month drove a spell of rain-laden northwesterlies across the country.
This pattern brought a much wetter than average month north of Taupo, with Bay of Plenty and Waikato the relatively wettest spots. Further south many places ran drier than average, particularly the upper and eastern South Island. Nelson saw just 20% of normal October rainfall whilst parts of Canterbury saw less than half what could normally be expected.
Temperatures varied wildly across the country thanks to high pressure mainly sitting to our west exposing eastern regions to cool southerlies.
