Re: Polar Blast - Oct 5-6
Just a dusting of white along the higher western hills at Tawa, north of Wellington this morning. The highest is Colonial Knob at 468m above sea level. Currently 5.5C with a mean amount of wind chill.

Re: Polar Blast - Oct 5-6
After a calm night and frost a moderate to strong SSW wind is strung back up.
Had 1cm of snow from last evening second front. The lightning was only 15km away yet it was not heard here, this made me think, I wonder if thunder is dampened to some degree by the flakes, because normally we would hear thunder from that close.

Well that was an impressive shower just through here, 81km/h gust of wind and small hail, high electric charge on it too caused a huge burst of noise on the lightning detectors.. dropped temperature to 10degC

Re: Polar Blast - Oct 5-6
A few showers re developing out there this afternoon and to my surprise even a few snow flurries, West Christchurch near the airport so the upper air must be still quite cold.

Nothing so far in St Albans, though looking darker to south. Still an extremely cold airflow over NZ, with MetService forecasts of snow showers to 200m from Waikato and BOP southwards this afternoon. Reports of flurries today in Taupo, Whanaganui, and Palmerston North.Storm Struck wrote: ↑Thu 06/10/2022 14:40 A few showers re developing out there this afternoon and to my surprise even a few snow flurries, West Christchurch near the airport so the upper air must be still quite cold.

1 degree with snow flurries in Ashhurst this morning, 70 m asl. First snow I've seen here since 2011. Heading north a bit later, Mt Taranaki looked very wintry. In October!
Ok I've had enough, back to global warming please

Re: Polar Blast - Oct 5-6
Full marks to the forecasters who called this one right.
We'll all feel the sting in the tail with a couple of cold nights as it fully moves on.
The agriculture sector plans well for these things, but there may be a ping for us from the horticulture sector which may suffer another delayed or lost crop from cool or cold nights in prime growing areas. The slower crops might get through if we don't have more rain, but the spring crops (lettuce, herbs, etc.) may suffer a setback and the summer crops (capsicums, tomatoes etc) might have a late season.
Interesting times.

Re: Polar Blast - Oct 5-6
Reportedly Chch's first October snow in 53 years (though might've been a light fall in the 80s); this being the 1969 event:

This was the weather map for 6pm that day, admittedly the city's snowfall was early in the day:

Been watching a few postings from Geoff Macklay of the snow around Dunedin and the Kilmog Highway north of the city. Interesting and good footage.

Min of 2.2C here this morning, that’s a new record low for October in my 13 years of records.

Re: Polar Blast - Oct 5-6
I see Auckland Aero down to at least 3.9C 3.2C this morning, which would be its 3rd lowest Oct Tmin from records since 1962. Its lowest Oct Tmin is -0.6C in 1965, followed by 2.6C in 1969.

Re: Polar Blast - Oct 5-6
I think we have missed getting any heavy frosts after such a cold change, the last three morning 0 deg, -1.8 and +0.3, cant see tonight frost being too heavy either now the coldest of the air mass is moving off to the east.

The unusually fast turn-around into northerly airflow will be a saving grace for many.

Re: Polar Blast - Oct 5-6
I think Rotorua and Hamilton airports must have challenged thier all time Oct records this morning? The best memory is not as good as faded ink but I don't remember -3C in October in the last 20 years. I recorded a min -1.1 on my station solely due to heat radiating off buildings I think.Nev wrote:I see Auckland Aero down to at least 3.9C this morning, which would be its 3rd lowest Oct Tmin from records since 1962. Ruakura's -2.0C this morning was also its 2nd lowest Oct temp from records since 1907. Only -2.2C in 1933 was colder.
Here's a few more Auckland temps this morning from NIWA:
0.8C .. Pukekohe
1.8C .. Motat
2.4C .. Albany
2.5C .. Mangere

Re: Polar Blast - Oct 5-6
"Only -2.2C in 1933 was colder" yeah, find that quite astounding given the warmth of the last 2-3 years including this winter, and the winter temps that used to occur back then. This event was quite a curveball.

There will be impacts on fruit and veg prices from this cold snap. The berry growers in Waikato must surely have been hit hard.

Re: Polar Blast - Oct 5-6
Cant see that it will have much effect, its frost that damages fruit blossom, which they haven't had. Even the light frosts here wouldn't have damaged my stone fruit blossoms, its about -3 and under that is the problem for fruit growers.

Re: Polar Blast - Oct 5-6
Frost damage can take a while to fully show up and can be very local. The Spring growing season starts earlier this end of NZ. Hamilton went down to -2.9C on Friday morning while parts of South Auckland will have had ground frost.

Marlborough had solid frosts. Could be tough for wine this year round there
