Quite dramatic through west Christchurch with the wind change, heavy hail/graupel for about 15 minutes started to settle on the grass.
Some lightning observed and good peels of thunder.
Next round of the snow showers should be from about 9pm.
10c down to 2c in less than 5 minutes

Surface warmed up enough In the end to get the thunderstorm going. That extra time with the timing of the change further north of ashburton makes a difference. Here's two photos I captured out the back of rolleston. One with a small bolt I managed to get.
Reasonable size hail stones aswel, about 15mm in size

Wind change brought a heavy bust of graupel that has now turned to snow

The chain of showers is quickly establishing itself offshore with Chch and Banks Peninsula in its sights. I’m not expecting anything in Ashburton tonight except for this awful wind.

Agreed, looking like the showers are skirting around the coast and hitting the banks instead.Unless we get something more inland I don't think we will see anything more wintery than a frost in the morning. :?

Yes snow for Chch has been hyped big time by our usual suspects and also NIWA.

Yup. We did! Very intense hail and some thunder too.

Was not a breath of wind before the front hit. Temp dived 3 deg to 4 in 20 mins 👍🏼

The forecast southerly front hit here at Tawa just north of Wellington at 23:20 with rain, hail and thunder. Temperature down to 4.5C - a drop of 3.6C in an hour. As Beaconhill describes, it was relatively calm here late evening until she came through. Rain is now steady and that wind has 'attitude'.

Nice to see you guys are getting some interesting weather.

The earlier forecasts for the maximum temperature for Wednesday at Invercargill were only out by one degree. Still very chilly at 6°C.

Lower down this tweet there is a picture of snow on the beach on Stewart Island.

Heavy graupel now for about 20 minutes with snow flakes mixed in, settling fast as the ground was dry prior to it falling.
See what its like by 7am should be a good dusting. \:D/

Seems to have had the lightest of dustings here in Parklands. Bit of a non-event.

However the port hills look pretty in a little white

We've got 8 cm of snow here in Mosgiel this morning, and still falling. The snow is dry and big and flakey.

The heaviest snow in Mosgiel for many years?
