Just some distant thunder in Ashburton - the cell to the south of town rained itself out and then two healthy cells formed near Fairton and Chertsey/Rakaia and that was it. Feels very muggy here in town, temp 18 c

That cell past almost right overhead but was just more over Hornby, plenty of thunder but the lightning was very high up only viewed about two bolts.
Storms moving in a north to south shift hitting the upper jet, next lot to the north might fire as it hits the NE over the city.

Looks as though the storms are moving SE from the NW over areas north of Ashburton.
Something going up around Waimate way but weakening.
Nothing much down here even though dramatic skies for a while this afternoon.

Looking very carefully at the cloud to the north, it could almost be said to have a very subtle yellow-green tinge to it. Not just plain grey, anyhow.

Raining now and 16.4°C, gentle northerly breeze.

Got out and chased with aaron between the rolleston and ashburton area. Good low level moisture and surface winds favored the area to make up for lack of cold air aloft. Got a couple of good shots just near rakaia river this afternoon at 4pm..strong inflow tail was getting sucked into this storm as it got going.

Sadly the thunderstorms weren't all that great down here. I blame it on climate change where severe weather events that have occurred in the past in situations like this, would of produced something more substantial.
Lots of potential thunderstorm risks have evolved recently with nothing happening.
In some ways it is good to overcast thunderstorm activity by using MS Ts Risk" scenario but then you can tell of my years of observing weather, the odds are not there. MS were good today with Ts forecasts for Canterbury between Ashburton and Christchurch with lots of cloud to cloud lightning as photographed by Mike. Shame I couldn't use my app. if that storm was further south, maybe.

My feeling is that weather patterns change for reasons we can only guess at.

Just an anecdote: I remember forty years ago hearing an old farmer say that a known hail-belt in Mid-Canterbury had shifted "since the transmission lines from Benmore went in".

Some great photos above, mikestormchaser _b
