Re: General November Weather
Some of those storm cells are actually out on the plains outside any risk area too, very explosive looking inland currently.
There is one cell pushing down from the north looks to be near Rangiora currently, has its anvil stretching out over the city.

Photos on CWU (yes I know, but people post good photos on there) show hail in Methven earlier 1-2cm in diameter.

Re: General November Weather
Looking unstable down here now with the sky having that sultry sort of look with it, after a fine morning, which I thought that we were supposed to have some rain or clagg?

Non stop thunder for over an hour, so slow moving. Have unplugged everything as we had two very close strikes. Storm dought well and truly over.

Re: General November Weather
I'll eat my own hat! The storms did come onto the plains when I thought they would likely stay inland and into foothills. Got that one wrong! Anyhow I chased it to perfection. I don't mind being wrong when I get these pics

Re: General November Weather
How come the storm moves from NNW to SSE? That is very odd for the plains.

Re: General November Weather
interesting day here with no rain as forecasted for the earlier part of the day but fine and sunny here for the Geraldine Festival market day.
However it did cloud over during the afternoon with some what looked like instability heat showers scenarios associated with humid temperatures associated with the current low pressure system moving over NZ at the moment.
Anyway it was 23.4C today. A shower from the west around 8pm did deliver 0.4mm in the rain gauge.

Re: General November Weather
500mb shear jet at 4pm today shows clear NW to E direction. So any storms would be pushed along this line. Not a strong jet today though.
Here are the two shots with more definition with the lightning for interest.

Re: General November Weather
You are right in wondering that. I grew up in Rangiora and in those days electrical storms never came from that direction. In the 80's a major hail storm came in from the SE, that was a strange direction to come in from

Re: General November Weather
Yes it is the upper flow that push storms in a particular direction. Also storm movement can be into the direction they are building into.
Some Tstorms are modelled for the central North Island tomorrow. See how the upper trough moves.

Nice 24 hr graphic from MS. Continuous T-storms over the North Island from the BoP southwards pretty much all day yesterday...

P.S. Not sure if the colours represent concentration or age - probably the latter?

Re: General November Weather
May only be a low risk here but cloud buildups are now happening in all directions, if any storms do develop today they wont move N to S like yesterday, should drift NE instead.

One or two weak 'poofs'. I mean puffs of Cu going up around the 4 Peaks but not expecting much development today.

Re: General November Weather
We had some clouds like that down our way but lower Stratus layers moved across from the west hindering observance. Still NE winds here.
