First warned storm is notified:

Area: South Waikato, Waikato, Matamata Piako, Waipa, Otorohanga

Forecast: At 01:37 pm, MetService weather radar detected severe thunderstorms near CAMBRIDGE, KARAPIRO, MAUNGATAUTARI, TE MIRO, LEAMINGTON, WHITEHALL, ROTOORANGI and EUREKA.

These severe thunderstorms are moving towards the east, and are expected to lie near CAMBRIDGE, KARAPIRO, ARAPUNI, MAUNGATAUTARI, TE MIRO, WHITEHALL and KIWITAHI at 02:07 pm and near MATAMATA, TIRAU, WAHAROA, PUTARURU, ARAPUNI, TE POI, OKOROIRE, HINUERA and HODDERVILLE at 02:37 pm.

These thunderstorms are expected to be accompanied by very heavy rain, damaging wind gusts, possible tornadoes and hail.

Very heavy rain can cause surface and/or flash flooding about streams, gullies and urban areas, and make driving conditions extremely hazardous.

Very strong wind gusts can break branches from trees, damage roofing, and make driving hazardous especially for high-sided vehicles and motorcycles.

Tornadoes can blow out windows, lift roofs, break large branches off trees, generate dangerous flying debris and blow vehicles off the road.

Hail can cause damage to crops, orchards and vines and may make driving conditions hazardous.

Rumbling itself crazily at the mo. Sadly just offshore, no CG's seen, all embedded. Been several lines come through but this is the best so far. Brief pea sized hail.

Went to have a look out peel forest way but the rain was that heavy I decided to turn around Incase the road flooded. Would of been probably around 50mm/h + never seen it that heavy in any thunderstorm I've driven in, including over on the coast.

I think this must be the most thundery day since Dec 2018 when there were storms in the gulf all night long. At least 4 separate active cells since midday.

That storm has been parked in the same spot for at least two hours now.

Ecan showing 61mm in the last hour at Blandswood (Base of Mt peel).
Nothing much here with most of the action more inland and to the north of here.

That does not surprise me at all. The radar is still showing a decent storm with heavy rain. Nothing here in Ashburton either. We’ve been surrounded all afternoon but no rain as yet.

Edit I see that ECAN reading is from 5pm. It could be double that by now (6.27pm). Wow!

Tried to record some lightning shots on my new Lightning App, but nothing came out. :(
Managed to capture some long rumbles on video though.

Did you go into check the frames of the photos taken John? Sometimes it doesn't look like you have got any lightning but once you flick through you can see them better and choose which ones to keep or discard before starting the button again.

Had some sporadic drops here not long ago, so the shower cells are spilling onto the plains at least.

I tried that but couldn't see anything.
I did have my AM radio on to listen to the sferics, once heard. push the button but nothing seemed to come out. There was one brilliant flash looking towards Mt. Peel of lightning squiggles all over the place but looking at the frames later nothing seemed to be there but just the cloud.?
Anyway, can't wait to the next thunderstorm to try to capture some lightning.

ODT/Star reporting 90mm/hour!!
In the space of 45 minutes, a Canterbury township went from basking in the sun to dealing with a “frightening” flash flood that washed away crops and caused widespread damage to infrastructure.

Residents of Peel Forest, 60km north of Timaru, measured 90mm of rainfall in one hour on Sunday evening.

It sure was heavy, definitely wasn't taking the risk as I felt that the road would flood if I kept heading that way
