Looked very intense around Otahuhu on the radar... 8-o

Probably best NZ storm I have experienced tbh. Peak only lasted about 5 mins luckily! Pity I didn't get a proper view as parenthood called at that exact moment.. Hopefully a few more rumbles from round 2!

That Auckland storm was spitting out heaps of positive bolts. Most occurring on the updraft end of the storm (indicating they probably were clear air bolts)

Some nice development north and south of Auckland city during yesterday afternoon. Thunderstorms affecting central Auckland during the evening. I will post some photos later.

A line of Cbs is visible in our western sky this morning.

Coromandel, Waikato and BoP look like the place to be today...

MetService Thunderstorm Outlook

Humid and unstable conditions are expected during today, especially this afternoon and evening.

There is mostly a moderate risk of thunderstorms for most of the North Island. These thunderstorms are expected to bring heavy rain with intensities of 15 to 25 mm/h and hail. However about Coromandel Peninsula, Waikato and Bay of Plenty, the risk of thunderstorms is high with a moderate risk of SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS producing strong wind gusts, large hail and the risk of a small tornado.

Apart form Fiordland, the Southern Lakes and southern Westland, there is also a moderate risk of thunderstorms this afternoon and evening, especially inland. These thunderstorms are mostly expected to bring heavy rain with intensities of 15 to 25 mm/h and hail, however about inland Southland and Central Otago, there is a low risk of slow moving thunderstorms becoming SEVERE, producing localised downpours of 25 to 40 mm/h.

There is also a lower risk of thunderstorms for most remaining areas of the country.

Severe Thunderstorm Watch issued:
Metservice wrote:Period: 8hrs from 11am - 7pm Sun, 20 Nov
Area: Coromandel Peninsula, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Rotorua, Taupo
Forecast: Humid and unstable conditions are expected to bring thunderstorms to many areas of the North Island during today, producing localised heavy rain and hail. In the Bay of Plenty, including Rotorua, Waikato and the Coromandel Peninsula, there is a moderate risk some of the thunderstorms could become SEVERE. These SEVERE thunderstorms could bring large hail greater than 20mm in diameter, strong winds gusting greater than 110 km/h, and even the risk of a small tornado. Large hail can cause significant damage to crops, orchards, vines, glasshouses and vehicles, as well as make driving conditions hazardous. Wind gusts greater than 110 km/h in strength can cause some structural damage, including trees and power lines, and may make driving hazardous. If any tornadoes occur, they will only affect very localised areas.

Got drenched at Rainbows End while on the GoldRush ride this afternoon. Skies opened up after 12.30 h. Still fun anyway.
