Storm Struck wrote: Thu 24/11/2022 19:15 Took a quick chase out to birdlings flat well halfway anyway just past Motukarara, as I thought the cell might skirt offshore like they usually do.
Had some heavy rain and hail about 5mm through just before Tai tapu, only observed one flash though.
Just some rain shafts in a photo for reference :D
Update 7:40pm new thunderstorm coming out of Mt Peel and some down near Oamaru.

The same area that got hit with flash flooding from an intense thunderstorm the other day. Peel Forest got 100mm in 1.5 hours I believe.

Certainly got some intensity as it rolls up the plains although hugging inland instead of coastal.
Just goes to show if the ingredients are ripe we are into the time of year where storms can continue after dark.
Surface models show at least a moderate dousing for most overnight now.

Ended up with numerous strikes in and around Waiheke around 10pm last night, along with heavy rain as the active storm moved across from the North Shore to Coromandel.

HUGE night for me and Mrs. Powermad! Saw the BP storm from New Brighton, saw the TC development and headed south. Intercepted near Methven. Crossed the Rakaia and reintercepted at Darfield. Went home and to bed knackered. About to drop off and BOOM! 3 big peals of thunder over Chch! A great day!

Would have been a separate storm to the one just out to sea from here at around that time, it was producing lightning about once a minute or so, not really that active but cool seeing lightning at night and seeing the updrafts of the system, we dont see that side during nighttime from West Coast/mountain storms.
