A front moves southeast over Northland during the morning, reaching Auckland towards midday. There is a moderate risk of thunderstorms with this front, these storms may be accompanied by hail, heavy rain 10 to 20 mm/h, strong wind gusts of 90 km/h and a chance of a small tornado. There is a low risk that these storms could become Severe with one or two localised damaging tornadoes. There is a moderate risk of thunderstorms in Taranaki with heavy rain and a slight chance of a small tornado.
A low risk of thunderstorms with heavy rain extends over the remainder of the upper and central North Island.
A slow moving front is expected to affect the far south of the North Island. There is a moderate risk of thunderstorms for Horowhenua Kapiti Coast and a low risk for Wellington and the Marlborough Sounds. Those storms could bring bursts of heavy rain, 10 to 25 mm/h.
Cold air at upper levels is expected to make conditions over the upper South Island unstable. There is a low risk of thunderstorms with heavy rain from central parts of Westland to Buller.
No thunderstorms or significant convection expected elsewhere in New Zealand during this period.

Front was short and sharp here earlier. Looks to be firing up quite nicely around the Waikato in last half hour or so...
