Some good images on the NZ storm chasers Facebook group of a funnel in Southland earlier. Impressive storm on radar near Gore at the moment. Appears to be a large hail core.

I headed south late afternoon to Ramarama, South Auckland where some cells were going up. A small amount of thunder heard and a small funnel cloud observed. The funnel cloud was at the tail end of a developing line which went on to produce a thunderstorm, some photos. I heard there was hail at Pukekohe earlier today.

Flew into Queenstown this afternoon and drove down to Invercargill. Took this in Lumsden looking south east down towards Gore at around 4.15pm

Very nice photos guys. Has been very unstable these last two months. Especially for north island and southland. Canterbury had a very unstable November.

More on the cards tomorrow for both islands. Once again for you John it might be a good area to be down there in Geraldine

I'm picking for here today and as happened in the past the day starts off with a ground fog which lifts into a broken low based cloud layer from where the days storms develop, the cloud base keeps lifting as the day heats up, its currently at about 400m.

It's quite hard to see when there is mid and lower level cloud, but looking inland there's plenty of development going on with towers visible.
The radar is building nicely with lots of heavy showers and storms developing, peak time is between 4 and 8pm.

The warned storm in Hawke's Bay look pretty sustained in intensity on the loop. It's been quite the storm potential season.

Edit: Here comes the nowcasting with the Severe watch just being issued.

Looks like a good wee cluster of storms to your west Orion.
The storm that past by here was pathetic, half doz rumbles and a few spots of rain. Looking dark to the WSW so maybe a other storm.

Our local river is up and dirty this morning, so there must have been reasonable totals in the foothills last evening.

The thunderstorm risk moves back onto northern NZ Boxing day . There is upper level warming from the 27th for a stable finish to 2022 for NZ.

Today's Thunder outlook seems a little odd, it's all over the show.
Plus ive never seen them put strong wind gusts 50-60kmh on there :-k , perhaps it's to cater for those out camping.

I have to admit the convergence and surface moisture is more on the coast and plains today than it was yesterday.
