Re: General December Weather
Another overcast day with no sunshine and moderate to fresh ENE breezes. 15C for today. 3.3mm of overnight drizzle.
I think I saw a glimpse of blue sky for a few seconds this afternoon.

Re: General December Weather
The rain has been a no show here, dry here since early yesterday.
Increasing moisture and upper level cooling by the weekend will bring the chance of some heavy showers and thunder to some parts of NZ. The South Island has the upper level cold air while the North Island has high dew point numbers. See how it all looks on Saturday. The dew points for northern NZ will be up to 19-20C.

Re: General December Weather
Apparently it has been a windy day in Christchurch today with the NE producing a high wind run according to Jeff's weather station in Hillmorton.

Re: General December Weather
Was bloody cold today until the sun finally came towards evening.
I see Mt Ruapehu looks to have more snow on it at the moment than it did a lot of winter

Re: General December Weather
Clagg and low cloud cleared away later this morning with a welcome return to high cloud and sunshine.
Becoming warm this afternoon with it getting up to 23.4C. Wind mostly from the NE direction but it did go westerly at one time.
There are stars out tonight which I haven't seen for a while.

Re: General December Weather
Afternoon heating, very moist air and convergence bring the chance of some heavy showers later for Northland and west Auckland. The upper level warmth is limiting the chance for thunder.

Re: General December Weather
Finally a few spots of rain but not comming to much. This would be one of the more major "misses" with respect to modelled three day rain accumulation compared to what actually happened, that I can recall.spwill wrote:The rain has been a no show here, dry here since early yesterday.

Re: General December Weather
Sure was, normally early morning 5-7am is fairly calm and sedate, yesterday the wind was blowing! Consistent peak gusts in the 40-50kph range from midnight to 8am and then it was stronger right through the day and never really stopped.NZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote: ↑Thu 08/12/2022 18:47 Apparently it has been a windy day in Christchurch today with the NE producing a high wind run according to Jeff's weather station in Hillmorton.

Re: General December Weather
Fine day with high cloud and the odd shower moving across especially to the south of here.
A warm day with a maximum of 26.1C was recorded today with a total rainfall recording of AFD, which is less that a trace.

Re: General December Weather
Interesting day weather-wise especially this afternoon with thunderstorm development to the south of here moving out of the southern part of the 4 Peaks area and moving south towards Timaru.
Warm today with it getting up to 26.8C this afternoon before the thunder.
A photo I took today of the cloud from the thunderstorm which looks like a teddy bear from the back looking south

Re: General December Weather
Just getting some good rain now in the city and looks like some steady falls moving in from the west, every drop is needed as we dive into summer.
Speaking of which for a few days now there is a particularly unsettled period coming up for most of the country but also the eastern South island.
Thursday to the following Monday hold instability potentials each day for different parts of Canterbury, initially a more inland on Thursday but possibly shifting onto the plains by Friday.
A little more southerly set up around Sunday Monday, rather than the more recent isolated convergence set ups.
Worth keeping an eye on.

Re: General December Weather
A generally cloudy day but mildness this morning and other contributing factors resulted in 2 thunderstorms moving from the west to east today off the foothills, north and south of here this afternoon. Today's maximum was 21.4C before the southerly came through mid afternoon.
No lightning seen but lots of the thunder sounds.
1.7mm of rain all up today.
Nice to have Richard and "Mrs. Richard" pop in on their way through back to Medbury from down south also to see Aaron and Mike Stewart (Thunder and Mikestormchaser on the forum). Another meeting is due of the Canterbury Storm Chasers, maybe next year here in Geraldine! Maybe Orion, Dean and Darcyplumb from Ashburton come along and Snowstormchaser from near Fairlie??? Nice to put a face to a name

Re: General December Weather
The models point to an active period for thunderstorms from the coming weekend. Normally we would be watering the garden by now but the rain this year is doing a good job of that.

Bit of low level instability around today. To stable in the above layers to break any caps though.

Re: General December Weather
Cracker of a day. Very still and warm with 27.6 but the air was rather dry which made it nice. Then we had a very impressive sea breeze front come through. Check out my graph from today! It’s nuts.

Re: General December Weather
After the last 2 days of interesting weather, today is was just clagg with a light NE developing.
Today's maximum was a warm 19C considering the grey overcast conditions for most of the day.

Re: General December Weather
A cloudy wet December so far for central Auckland, Grey Lynn already up to 85.6mm. Localised downpours will have created variation in rainfall around Auckland.
