Was out for an early dinner in Penrose and got a very heavy deluge from that cell earlier. Poor restaurant got flooded. A lot of surface flooding on the way home.

This morning's update for today...
MetService Thunderstorm Outlook

A large trough with a humid airmass lies over the country. A slow-moving front within the trough is over the North Island. A low is expected to move slowly eastwards across the South Island during the day. These features, combined with daytime heating lead to unstable conditions in many places.

This morning, there is a moderate risk of thunderstorms about western Northland, Auckland and Waikato. The area of moderate risk expands this afternoon to also cover Waitomo, much of Bay of Plenty, central North Island and Hawke's Bay. These thunderstorms may be accompanied by localised heavy rain with intensities of 10 to 25 mm per hour and hail, reaching 5 to 10 mm in diameter this afternoon and evening. There is also a low risk this afternoon and evening of severe thunderstorms in this area, bringing localised downpours with intensities of 25 to 40 mm per hour. The thunderstorms should ease this evening.

There is also a moderate risk of thunderstorms about parts of Buller and Westland this morning until tonight, and about most of the rest of the South Island during the afternoon and evening. These thunderstorms may produce hail of 5 to 15 mm in diameter and localised heavy rain of 10 to 25 mm per hour, and possibly more.

Outside the above areas, there is a low risk of thunderstorms this afternoon and evening that covers the rest of New Zealand apart from some central areas and Stewart Island, as shown on the chart.

Today is more about good local convergences as the upper trough and low cross over to the east.
-22c upper air still relatively warm although for summer is not too bad, any cells will be heavy in nature with moderate size hail 15-20mm.
Canterbury, home of good rugby and severe storms

Today for me I feel south Canterbury/ inland timaru area is the best spot. If we are going to chase that's where we are heading. That's where the best convergences and dew points sit.

Timaru might get a thunderstorm as they spread to the coast.

There could well be other storms fire up mid Canterbury but that's the best spot.So John you might see us down your day later.

I’ve been watching some decent towers go up inland from here since about 9.30 this morning. A nice easterly blowing too with some good sunshine.

Edit to add a cell appears to be developing on radar near the Mt Peel hot spot.

Only a 2 minute shower here so far. I see round two is developing around the inland hot spots at the moment.

Pretty much panned out as expected. Only saw one flash and a clap of thunder in mayfield and the storm looked good for awhile but didnt come to much. Was never a huge day today. Ended up stopping to see John this afternoon which was great and another friend in mt somers on way back from Geraldine.

That's was great timing today, after leaving your place those rumbles we heard when we were there we drove through, a heavy shower as well along with two flashes, but boring from then on. :(

A dull day here for most of yesterday, sunny spells would have got the thunderstorms going like Saturday.
