Quite a noticeable increase in lightning from this storm overhead at the moment.

Cool. Ashburton must have a 20:1 ratio of thunder days compared to chc.

Re: Severe risk Canterbury Plains 24th Dec
We’ve actually missed most of the activity so far this season. This is our first decent storm of the season. Others have just been distant rumbles or remnants of storms moving off the upper plains.

At 5.00pm we had a half hour period of lots of thunder and lightning, some over head, but bugger all rain though.

Re: Severe risk Canterbury Plains 24th Dec
Today has been one of the best chase days in ages.
Turned more into a night time chase, storms decided to fire up alot later in the day than we thought.
The storm which got going near Mayfield turned severe.
Had to core punch it to get on the other side of the rain free updraft to have any chance of lightning photography. But wow talk about torrential rain and dangerous lightning. Multiple CGs.. and close bolts. A real Canterbury plains storm!

Todays outlook has been updated. The moderate risk appears to be closer to the coast compared to the last update.

Typical. It would have to happen whilst we were away.mikestormchaser wrote: ↑Sat 24/12/2022 23:33 The storm which got going near Mayfield turned severe.

Re: Severe risk Canterbury Plains 24th - 25th Dec
Much more heating today and less upper and lower level cloud.
As I mentioned earlier there's also a weak upper trough crossing from the west to give abit of omph, will be brief though between 4 and 8pm.
Storms currently inland from Timaru and also has been some near Mt Peel.

Re: Severe risk Canterbury Plains 24th - 25th Dec
Yes some nice cells going up inland again. Bit more tropical looking cells than the severe ones last night.
The cells today are ones likely to stay relatively stationery, drop everything then die. Looks like a nice thunderstorm you're way Richard. Lots of serferics on radio so quite active. I'll be passing on chasing today, after a couple drinks and feeling very relaxed. Merry Christmas to all

Re: Severe risk Canterbury Plains 24th - 25th Dec
Nothing happened here but Lees Valley area around 3.00 looked much more active that what the radar was showing, and now the Molesworth area has large storms that look amazing. Over the years there would have to have been some very high localized rainfall rates in central Marlborough.

Yeah, Molesworth always cops it when the weather is boil-up shower primed. Its another one of those magic spots.Richard wrote: ↑Sun 25/12/2022 19:09 Nothing happened here but Lees Valley area around 3.00 looked much more active that what the radar was showing, and now the Molesworth area has large storms that look amazing. Would be a great area to go to on days like today. Went for a quick drive to get a photo, its as active as a hour or so but still very photogenic.

Re: Severe risk Canterbury Plains 24th - 25th Dec
They look like such solid thundershower clouds, I've always wanted to go for a look up that way. Some weather like that would be a nice bonus.
