We've had 19mm the last 3 days. Certainly "a bit less" than modelled

Re: General January Weather
Close day with occasional showers and not much wind.
Back home tomorrow and hopefully might get a thunderous welcome on our return.

There are three storm warnings at once. She's going for it down Otago way.

Re: General January Weather
The storm between Rakaia and Chch has just erupted after interacting with the onshore breeze. Here in Ashburton, I’m surrounded by towers, very humid and hot.

Re: General January Weather
Storm just about to hit I'd say Rolleston, big CB cloud tops on it may brush western and Southern Christchurch soon.

I can see the tops of the towers down my way. Very impressive and getting taller.Storm Struck wrote: ↑Fri 06/01/2023 15:09 Storm just about to hit I'd say Rolleston, big CB cloud tops on it may brush western and Southern Christchurch soon.

Re: General January Weather
More angry looking bases are forming to the west of the main rain as just I've typically seen before.
Now it doesn't look so bad out west but instead its got a new angry base infront of the rain that may clobber Halswell.

Re: General January Weather
That storm moving down the Rangitata River looks to have a decent hail core.

Re: General January Weather
Back home in Geraldine.
Continuous rumbling to the north here towards the Mt. Peel area.
Didn't look all that unstable in the upper atmos returning from Wellington.

Re: General January Weather
Had continuous distant rumblings here for 20 odd mins and then 15 mins of very heavy rain.
Rain has eased off now and have had a couple of massive cracks of thunder which seemed right over our house. Scared the pets quite a bit.
Temp was over 30°C before the rain. It's now 19°C.

Re: General January Weather
Continous thunder in southern Christchurch seen a few big bolts, its siddling its way in with the incoming SW.
Edit has definitely characteristics of a supercell, lightning shooting out the top now.

Re: General January Weather
MS just issued a Severe Thunderstorm warning for Christchurch & Selwyn:
Update with the map - quite out of the watch zoneArea:
Selwyn and Christchurch City
Forecast:
At 03:30 pm, MetService weather radar detected severe thunderstorms near LINCOLN, ROLLESTON, BURNHAM, SPRINGSTON and TEMPLETON. These severe thunderstorms are moving towards the eastsoutheast, and are expected to lie near LINCOLN, SPRINGSTON and TAITAPU at 04:00 pm and near LITTLE RIVER, BANKS PENINSULA, LAKE ELLESMERE and TAITAPU at 04:30 pm. These thunderstorms are expected to be accompanied by torrential rain, hail and frequent lightning.
Impact:
Torrential rain can cause surface and/or flash flooding about streams, gullies and urban areas, and make driving conditions extremely hazardous. Hail can cause damage to crops, orchards and vines and may make driving conditions hazardous. Frequent lightning is dangerous to people and livestock, especially those exposed outdoors or on the water, and can cause power surges and damage to electrical equipment.

Still sunny and only hearing the occasional rumble from here in the East, but great view towards the hills

Re: General January Weather
That cell is heading out towards Akaroa, still very impressive to watch from the outer edge rather than being in it.
It went briefly SW but is now NE again, there is more moisture modeled so continue to keep your eyes peeled.

Re: General January Weather
A 'back-burner' thunderstorm is now moving out if the 4 Peaks area.
One fork seen (missed on my lightning camera) but mostly cloud to cloud.

Rapid development basically everywhere I look. The best it’s looked all season.
