Did you not get the NW today? It looked like the coastal winds held out down your way with the radar bug lines.
The strong gusty NW hit around half 4, then had a few brief spots of rain from the main front.
Southerly knocked on the door around 9pm, some strong gusts out there still.
The temperature at half 4 went from 24C to 29C in less than 20 minutes when the sun came out along with the NW.
No, no NW to speak of.
Southerly proper arrived around 8pm, had to scurry round shutting windows before they were shut for me.
Yet there was little wind when the change arrived here

Another day of cloud reducing itself to clagg for the afternoon and evening with winds between south and east.
18C for today but much colder than that this afternoon.
Went to the supermarket today here and noticed one person said it was freezing outside when asked by the check-out operator as to what was the weather like outside. o_O

The abrupt shift in cooler upper air with the cold front brushing up the south island this evening, might result in a few isolated cells to flare up.
Looks best Timaru to Ashburton between 6 to 10pm, nothing too severe but worth keeping an eye on.
Models suggest surface winds should be South or SW for today, however it's light NE here this morning.
The city might get a spell of heavy showers after 10pm, but generally most of the activity should be to the south.

Came across this Funnel Cloud report when searching for UK events. It seems to be for Hawke's Bay on Thursday 19th January.

Some beefy clouds about this evening, maybe not enough for any lightning though.

A generally fine day with winds from the SE direction mostly.
Some scattered cloud this morning and afternoon mainly towards the foothills.
Cloud increasing more from the SW from late afternoon/evening with it coming onto rain from 8:30pm
Raining from then with 6.5mm to 10pm.

Clagg. One word that sums up today's weather. People are saying "Where's summer?"
13.4C the maximum for today.

Huge heat signal coming out of EC for next week for Christchurch and Canterbury as a whole. Looks to be 5-7 days straight of 28-30C+ temps…

Another day of clagg especially this afternoon and into the evening. Looked brighter this morning as cloud layers were higher and much brighter but not to be with lower grey skies and the occasional drizzle shower moving through during the afternoon and evening.
Today's maximum was 16.7C.
Looks like summer will be much cooler as a result of all this clagg days here but then I wouldn't be surprised if late January/ early February produces temperatures in the high thirties to muck up average temperatures with Media saying "It's been the hottest summer ever" >_< :>
Warmer nights are a contributor to warmer weather rather than than daytime temperatures in some cases, I think. :-k

January has been very dry so far and nothing rainfall wise forecast in the next 10 days either. Christchurch may well come away with single digit mm of rainfall same as January 2020.

On long term average, at this time of year the Christchurch area is one of the driest parts of the country.

We had 2mm of rain on Sunday night and 2mm of drizzle yesterday, seems pointless as it would be all evaporated again by now.
It is fairly normal for it to be calmer and much more dry in January, those strong NE days will be drying the soil too.
I can't recall a summer with so many days of strong NE, but that is the typical La Nina too.

The weather coming up won't be comfortable as it's a mix of very warm temperatures and high humidity.
Hopefully abit of a splash for Friday, also presents a thunder risk for the region.

Cloudy overnight and this morning but cloud lifting and gradually becoming fine this afternoon apart from some high cloud.
Much milder with it getting up to 21.4C for today. Light wind from the north direction.
Good to see the sun today and the moon this evening.

A decent fog here this morning. Visibility quite limited. I guess that means it’s going to be a very humid heat when it clears later today.

Days with afternoon shower and/or storms often start just like this. Not that it's a definitive guide at all of course. It's merely my observation over time.

I agree. The fog has now cleared and it’s very hot and humid. I see MS have added a moderate TS risk for my area this afternoon.

Warmer today than previous days this week, 24.4C for today.
Partly cloudy conditions this morning and scattered high cloud this afternoon with a hazy look to the sky along the foothills.
Not much wind. Mild evening. Nothing happening thunder wise despite MS forecasts.

Observed fancy mares' tails aloft again this morning.
