Back to the clagg here with the occasional drizzly shower moving across from the east. Not clearing up as what the forecast is saying for here?

A day of clagg mainly but later on this afternoon skies began to lighten up with drizzle areas clearing but remaining cloudy and then becoming partly cloudy this evening with temperatures warming to today's maximum of 17.3C. The sun did pop out twice this afternoon 8)

Cloud clearing away this morning for a sunnier day than yesterday, thankfully.
MS have this area in a moderate risk for storms today while tomorrow should have a higher risk than today

A good 8- 15mm for most of the region Friday night, nothing in comparison to the North Island but every drop helps right now.
While it was cloudy yesterday and cooler this would have helped to let it soak in too.
This week is going to be very warm and humid, the current maps both surface and upper resemble something you don't very often see across Aotearoa but more further north.
Overnight lows between 18 to 21C and daytime highs in the late 20,s to early 30,s.
I'm looking at Christchurch around 33C for about 3-4 days straight from Friday onwards.

Perfect risk for your area tomorrow Richard, slight risk pushes those showers over the plains late afternoon possibly heavy.

Early February is notorious for hot days traditionally. I remember 7th December 1973. 8)

Lots of instability about this morning which was lacking yesterday morning. To have this instability this early is a good sigh.

Interesting day coming up for those in central NZ and top of the north with a moderate risk of severe storms. Its looking looking very promising here and its only 8.42am. Jase, Mike, pull a sicky and head inland :D
30thJan.png
A trough is moving westwards across Northland this morning, bringing heavy rain and possible SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS with localised downpours of 25 to 40 mm/h.

During the afternoon, heating combined with the humid conditions is likely to produce heavy showers and slow moving thunderstorms about the southern North Island and inland northern parts of the South Island.

For Taihape, Whanganui, Manawatu and Wairarapa, inland parts of Buller, Nelson, Marlborough and north to mid Canterbury, there is a moderate risk of SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS this afternoon and evening. These thunderstorms may produce localised downpours of 25 to 40 mm/h and hail of 10 to 20 mm diameter. A moderate risk of thunderstorms also extends further south to the MacKenzie District.

A trough and unstable northerly flow affects coastal Buller and Westland today, with a moderate risk of thunderstorms spreading southwards across these regions.

A broad low risk of thunderstorms covers many remaining parts of central and southern New Zealand as depicted on the chart.

High by our standards dew point here at the moment, 16.2%, being raining most of the morning but starting to brighten, should to push the temps up this afternoon, currently 20deg, 85% humidity.

Unfortunately the weather station stopped working properly at 6.00pm where 51mm had fallen in 40mins, that intense rain kept up till around 7.00 and was falling at around that same rate. When it was recording the rain was falling at 96mm per hour, the hour missing from the recording would have been around the same so we could have had around 150mm in the hour and a half

That is some storm! Been watching it on the radar last couple hours, barely moved, and covered most of North Canterbury. impressive.

An eventful day this afternoon up in the Amuri plains area.
Models pin pointed it perfectly in the high risk zone, saw some nice clouds and impressive pulsating CGS however with the messy rain band there was to much rain to be able to get lightning shots.

Richard called me earlier this evening and had a good talk to him about the storms in the area this evening, also discussing our next weather meeting we should have soon?
We did chat to John Gaul and he mentioned a possibility of having a meeting at his in Geraldine?

Anyway some photos from the day.

Glad you got a good thunderstorm today Richard. You should have a manual rain gauge just in case the NIWAR site is not working incorrectly.
Nothing much down here except for a fine day with extensive high cloud around and a light easterly.
26.1C for today. I bet most Aucklanders will be sick and tired of the heavy rain and thunderstorms by the end of the week. 8-o

Most welcome to have a meeting here. Possibly March sometime as we are away in February until later in the month.
It would be good to have people like Orion, Darcy Plum. Snowstormchaser come along so we can put a face to our local forum members.
