When it was recording the rain was falling at 96mm per hour, the hour missing from the recording would have been around the same so we could have had around 150mm in the hour and a half

Worked out that it shows in non daylight savings time, that's what buggered me up, had always thought the website had an hour lag.
So 58mm from yesterdays storm

Here's some January 2023 rainfall records to 9am this morning from MS. Note that it doesn't include Kaikohe's 527mm. Auckland Aero's 420mm was also its wettest all time month - previous record being 304mm set in July 1998.

After trying to rally a bit mid month, imagine some locations sunshine hours are going to threaten low records also.

Be interesting to know how much rain fell in the Hurunui Gorge during Mondays storm, this stream is only about a km long so not a huge catchment

January 2023 was a month of contrasts, being extremely wet and cloudy in the North Island, while mostly dry and sunny in the South Island.

From an article a few weeks back "The fewest sunshine hours that had ever occurred in the month of January was in 1989, with 168 hours of bright sunshine recorded"

So seems this month in Auckland has smashed two records in a undesired way.

Correct. This Jan was also Ruakura, Hamilton's cloudiest (by 3.5 hrs) - previous record of 159 hrs was also in 1989, from records since 1937.
