5.1, 5km South of Te Aroha

Gosh, that was easily the strongest earthquake ever felt here. A sharp jolt then a quick rattle. Much more unmistakable as to what it was than the 2016 Kaikoura one, although that had longer duration. By comparison, the 3.9 on the 29th Dec in a similar spot, I did not even notice that one.

These keep happening while I’m milking so I don’t feel them but I did notice the lights flicked a min or two before the alert came through on my phone.

Slept through last night's one thankfully. How unusual is it however to within a few weeks get two earthquakes of simillar size with the exact same epicentre?

I'd say probably not that unusual as part of an ongoing series of aftershocks. :-s There was also a very nearby M3.9 pre-shock on Dec 29.

They certainly are clustered closely together. There must be some reason for that. I don't recall seeing such tight clustering in other sets like the Seddon/Lake Grassmere sequence.
