Holy hell. We just put our daughter on an international flight yesterday arvo and left Auckland late this morning just as the rain was getting heavier, but had no idea it was going to turn into something like this. Talk about a near miss. Commiserations to those caught up in it...

Lots of good info on this live blog

https://i.stuff.co.nz/national/weather- ... s-auckland

I must ask, where is the State of Emergency?? Surely that should have been declared hours ago?

I hate to talk about this during an event but I looked at the auckland forecast this morning on MS and from memory it was 76mm of rain forecast.

265mm here, rain has stopped and flood water levels are falling quickly thankfully. Next street over from here was hit very hard, people have probably lost everything with water knee deep through houses.

Looks like us slightly east dodged a bullet luckily. Got the heavy rain all day but missed that 100mm + in 1-2 hours to finish. Thinking of you all west of here.

By the time this was issued, most of the heavy rain had eased significantly.

Rather late to the party that’s for sure.
Seriously poor comms by the Auckland Mayor too.

Totally agree with this. There will be a number of reviews after this event I would imagine. Metservice, Auckland local government and emergency management. I know you can’t always predict the weather accurately but what’s the point in the red warning? It was far too late.

T-storms in the very outer Gulf atm.

I see Auckland Aero recorded 131mm in the 2 hrs to 9pm (twice its normal Jan rainfall).

Just back from a 4 hour Community Patrol in New Lynn, Kelston, Greenbay area. The devastation is terrible, houses flooded, cars flooded on intersections, landslips. Got video footage, will upload on youtube tonight or tomorrow.

Several Akld Council central sites recorded over 280mm yesterday:

265mm here in 16hrs. Any flood water has gone from streets around here this morning.
Looks like there will be some brightness by afternoon with a dew point up to 22C and still a few showers around .The west looks favoured for a heavy shower.

Up to 120 at the southern end of lake Taupo. It’s still steady heavy rain now. How high will it go?

A photo from my walk in the Domain this morning.

Big instability numbers modelled for tomorrow with upper level cooling but lacking convergence, a day to watch though.

Crazy stuff!!

This definitely isn't over, Bay of Plenty could well be in the firing line as suggested by ACCESS - showing over 500mm in parts up to Thursday.

ECMWF is a bit more conservative:
