Given the predicted rainfall totals for the North Island, I wonder how much of a risk there is to Lake Taupō levels. They have been frantically running the outflow at full volume for the last 2 weeks, but it is only JUST starting to make a difference to the lake level in the last couple of days.

yea the Taupo thing is something I’ve been discussing with friends. It’s sure to be a big concern for them and anyone on the lake and river system.
Mercury cocked it up by running the lake too full in Jan. now they are paying the price.

Metservice's Whangaparaoa Peninsula station recording gusts to 131 km/h. Huge contrast to here! Just a little breezy at the moment

Whangaparaoa is one of those places that really catch the wind. The Harbour Bridge has gusts to 85km/h but wind mostly in the mod to fresh range here. Severe weather is rare in Mt Eden.

Fresh Easterly all night, low cloud, and a few heavy showers in Napier.
Nothing to bad, infact heading out for a run shortly- expecting deteriorating conditions though.
All schools are cancelled, but that may have been a bit keen.
How's Auckland holding up? Any showers we have had had have been worryingly torrential.

Not much to report in my area. Top gusts overnight on my station were 57km/h. Rain has just returned after mainly dry conditions since late afternoon

Wave bouy off Te Puke shows the prediction of 7m “waves” was correct. (Via Bay of Plenty Regional Council).

Windy night for Northland, cumulative rains to date nothing exceptional though. Some minor damage seen in exposed places (odd sheets of roofing iron on farm outbuildings, occasional trees down and general small shrubbery on the roads, poorly secured boats ending up on beaches etc). Most significant effect is the storm surge with an almost absence of low tide for the last 24Hrs and levels being held at ±.5m above normal. With the swells, wave run up at low tide is almost reaching the usual high tide lines along the NE coast. Several areas of urban inundation with the high tides around Whangarei especially.

We are very lucky this didn't hit a week ago when high tides were 0.5m higher...

For Auckland city we generally need sustained very heavy or torrential rain to cause any real flood problems, 25mm an hour +. Auckland is vulnerable to landslips at the moment though due to sodden ground . 28mm here since late Saturday night, heavier rain is modelled for today.

Latest GFS run has Gabrielle's central pressure dropping from 973 hPa to 963 hPa by 7 am tomorrow as it moves in towards the Hauraki Gulf. Tonight will be interesting.
I'm amazed at how well this was signalled in the models, as long as a week ago.

Am familiar with the appearance of Orewa Beach and have been noticing on the Surf Cam, how the tide never really seemed to go "out" yesterday.
Even now with well over two hours till high tide the waves are running fully up the sands.

Some photos of Orewa beach this morning (via Facebook).
Serious concerns for some of the very large trees along the waterfront.
Hopefully with the wind swinging slightly more southerly, they won’t get as large onshore waves (during the next few high tides) like they were getting yesterday.

The government are considering declaring a national state of emergency. Metservice emphasising that the next 24 hours will be the worst with the system moving closer and the pressure dropping.

Nothing to report here so far in South Auckland. Rainy and windy. I imagine we might be spared the worst wind wise here if the centre tucks in nice and close. Windy overnight if it is further east. And obviously just how low the pressure goes will have an impact too.

At the moment on electricity faults work-linepatrols in Port Albert and Wellsford. raining, not very heavy. Some wind, a few gusts not excessive. According to Ventusky the eye will be closer to Auckland at around 9 PM.

Looking like we'll get less rain than initially predicted (150-200mm) going by radar, very little around currently. I'm at 22.5mm for the system so far.

Some heavy rain is modelled for Auckland this evening.
See what wind we get when the flow tends southwesterly we are much more exposed to that direction here.

Current weather here, light-mod rain with a mod to fresh SE breeze.
