The centre could even be between Little barrier/Hauturu and Great barrier/Aotea now? Just a guess from the radar.

Re: Cyclone Gabrielle impacts on NZ - Feb 12-16
Wind picking up here last 30mins, some good gusts at my place now. 47.5mm here last 6hrs.
Some thunderstorm activity out Coromandel way , the instability is modelled to stay out that way.

Wishing all of you that are in the North Island the very best of luck for the next 12-24 hours. I think we can all agree that the worst case scenario is now unfolding up there. Both stuff and NZ herald have rolling coverage on their website for those interested.

I thought thunderstorms around the eye signified a rapid deepening. The wind in Napier is roaring, and the rain is horizontal. Impressive storm.

50mm here in the last 6 hours, wind’s gusty but nothing too unusual. Pressure still falling

It’s certainly impressive. Wind and rain are both on a strong scale and then you get them together over the duration and it’s something else. What a storm!

Ohinemuri River - Karangahake River level now at 17.3m, about 1.3m off its highest level of 18.66m when Waikino township got washed away in 1981. Does anyone know when it last reached these current levels?

Surely this pressure reading is an error..?

Just woke up and see pressure is stable at 971. I guess the centre hasn’t come as close as GFS was hinting at (it had us getting down around 967)

Maybe it didn't deepen as much as some models progged either? Going to be a gusty old day from the southwest I think. I hope those along the eastern coastlines of the North Island are doing okay..

Re: Cyclone Gabrielle impacts on NZ - Feb 12-16
The Tutaekuri River in the Hawkes Bay is a massive concern. Friend who lives nearby just sent photos of 2 of the other bridges, and they are at risk of being washed away.
The “old SH50 bridge near EIT has a large shipping container wedged against it. And the single lane Brookfields Road bridge has water close to the bridge deck. Water is within a foot of the top of the stop bank in many places and high tide is 4 hours away….

Hawkes Bay is crippled right now pretty much. Pretty bad here in terms of affected infrastructure, bridges, power ect.

Doesn't look good for those bridges with all that debris piling up behind them

Re: Cyclone Gabrielle impacts on NZ - Feb 12-16
Yep, definitely an error. In fact, from my general observations, I'd say the vast majority PWS's on Wunderground have never bothered to calibrate their barometers to sea level.
However, one of the more reliable PWS's at Claris Aero on Great Barrier Island recorded 965.4 hPa at 3:17am this morning. I think the lowest official site at Great Mercury Island (NZ Coastguard) got down to about 967 hPa around the same time. And according to MS, Gabrielle's centre was 967 hPa at 1am this morning and down to 966 hPa at 7am.
Heavy rain here last night brings my total to 125mm for this event so far.

Picked up 81mm from 5pm to 5am making an event total of 108mm. Escaped any particularly strong winds locally.

Esk Valley north of Napier (SH5 runs up the bottom of the valley) is fully flooded. Reports via facebook of people trapped in the roof spaces of their houses.

Re: Cyclone Gabrielle impacts on NZ - Feb 12-16
I think pretty bad news will start trickling in from many places this morn. No power, water or cell data in Gisborne apparently.
Windy afternoon in store here in Auckland. Especially West and North. Will see how we go here. Have got away very lightly so far.

Sadly I think you’re right. Also I think the govt will have no choice but to declare a national emergency to pull resources from other regions.

Some of the early photos from Hawkes Bay look terrible, thoughts are with them
