See what weather interest we can get over Auckland later today and overnight. Looks like some heavy showers develop this afternoon with increasing instability through this evening.

Pretty dark looking to the WSW at the moment with light rain falling here. Pretty sure I heard a distant long rumble way in that direction just before.

Heard 6 foothill thunder events over the last hour, the first one was the best, it was the type that finished off with the big thump at the end, but went on for maybe 15sec.
Do reckon that alpine/ foothill lightning have higher amperage than what we get on the plains and east North Canterbury, they seem much louder, for 30 years I worked in lots of high country sheep stations, experienced lots of high country storms over those years . Maybe its just because its the surrounding mountains bounce the sound about??

My station picked up 24mm in an hour overnight (11.40pm-12.40am), wasn’t expecting anything that heavy!

^ was a handsome tree, Richard.

Wondering what on earth people have been told in the public weather forecast for tomorrow: when out and about earlier this morning had two people look full of foreboding and mention it in ominous tones. 0_o
Has it been over-dramatised when presented on tv and radio?

Dont know if we can blame the tv or radio, it was on the MS severe outlook yesterday of 'high' risk of heavy rain and gales for all Canterbury, then at the same time the 3 day rain forecast and its nothing more than a quick flick of rain, gales yes maybe.

The lightning app which is not always pin point accurate, did plot some strikes up near Cheviot so exciting to hear about the thunder Tony.
It was quite strong and blustery from the NW direction around lunchtime and a few brief spots of rain.
The wind will be the main issue for some tomorrow depending where the low eventually deepens, but either way will be our biggest gale force winds in quite awhile especially from the southerly quarter.

Thus morning, so far: 13.4°C, some cloud, the occasional star visible (Arcturus), fresh westerly breeze.
